A book with good explanations
A book with many examples (grammar nuances too)
A book with many and varied exercises and corrections
A book that comes with good listening materials
A book with paper flashcards or anki files of the example sentences and vocab

I ended up buying Japanese for Everyone based on reviews and other people's recommendations (different from Minna no nihongo even though it has the same title). It's a bit faster paced than some of the others, but it supposedly covers Genki 1 and Genki 2, and it's cheap! It also has answers to the exercises in the back, which is great. There's generally only kana after chapter 1 too, which makes your reading skills improve quickly.

It seems to have quite a few exercises. The examples are to the point but generally easy to understand. There are listening tapes too that are out of print, but I've heard you can find the audio online if you look :-).

I haven't used it much yet (I decided to start RTK first), but you might want to check it out. It's supposed to be good for self-learners. I'm hoping it lives up to the praise!

It is a great book, from time to time I look outside in my DOBJG for better explanation on a point here and there but other than that it's great
