karategirl09 Wrote:I uploaded the file for the fixed plugin: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6912001/iknow.py . I would upload it to Ankiweb but not sure if I could as I didn't write it, I just fixed it.You could either contact Joe (who wrote the original plugin), or upload the updated version as a new plugin with a title that indicates it's still working.
Just replace this file in the plugins/smartfm folder and restart Anki.
It has 2 weird bugs: 1) Sometimes it'll report there are 0 items to import and give up instantly. In this case if you try again it always works. 2) For sentences, it seems to often list the linked vocab twice. If I have time I'll try to fix that but it's not urgent for me as the plugin works now at least.

phantombk201 Wrote:I reaaally hate using Anki,i tried using it multiple times and failed...There is no way to learn RTK in context because each one builds upon the last, so an SRS is most effective for this. Though, in my opinion, learning vocabulary should be learned in context while the language is actually being used in real-life situations. Use media sources that have transcripts or Japanese captions/subtitles. News broadcasts, music videos, anime, movies...
Using smart.fm was my main study method and i don't really know what to do now,i haven't even finished Core 2000..Are there any similar FREE sites out there for learning vocab?
suggestions please..

aphasiac Wrote:Great thanks, will give it a go tomorrow (when i have proper internet). It broke because Smart FM changed the URLs for fetching the XML files, and also changed the structure of the files a bit. I guess the API is not meant to be public any more but I found it by examining the HTML page containing the vocab list, and then guessing a bit.
Any info on how/why it broke? I assumed smart fm just completely stopped offering their public API in preparation of their paid services (where it makes no sense to allow random users to download their media).
Suppose I could just diff the two plugin files, but I don't know anything about Python..hmm

With my modified file, it still works (just tested it), though still with the two bugs I mentioned above. I've uploaded it as a new shared plugin called SmartFM Importer [Working]. I guess it'll stop working on 31st March though.

I just tried using the new plugin but it tells me I have an invalid url.
I'm trying to get the sentences/audio for the final step of core 6000 and I copy-pasted this:
http://smart.fm/goals/28836
Any help would be appreciated.

Ha!
I went through and made massive amounts of screen caps of as many of the vocabulary and example sentences as I could. It made me feel just a little better. The only thing I will regret is not being able to get are the recordings of native speakers reading the sentences.

Glad that I got the Japanese corePLUS deck file before this service stopped working. I suppose the cards tagged with an in capital letter written "CORE" belong to core6k, right? The .media folder is extremely large in file size; suppose this is the .mp3 files one cannot download right now anylonger

Sorry, it seems I had uploaded the wrong version of the plugin. I've re-uploaded exactly the version I have, tested and it works. So if you download again and try there should be no problem this time.

So I'm thinking of subscribing to smart.fm pro.
It's only £7.50 per month (less than 3 beers), and it's been so effective for me learning Japanese, that I'm scared of not being able to use it now I'm starting Mandarin.
Must admit I don't really like the new learning application as much as the old one, but I still managed to learn a few chinese vocab words, which is a good start. Really need all the help I can get (Mandrin seems 100x harder than Japanese initially, cos of all the strange sounds) so will probably sign up on a month-by-month subscription.

Will be great for finding my examples instead of just searching through my anki decks ^_^
Upon further inspection, maybe not ><

Just my two cents about the closing down.
Really hit me at first because I couldnt get into anki at all, tried it a few times. I'm still rather new mind, ca in the middle on core2k. So seeing that the end of march was coming towards present faster and faster I, again tried to switch to anki, this time i was more persistent. and it paid off, the leaning is faster overall because you can exactly choose what is beign asked and what not (no useless multiple choice 5 times a row) and especially customization, because I can just pick out the textbook vocab from the 2k list and review them now that I need them.
So I just gotta say... thanks for closing down

In the end, I think Anki was the better choice. after giving Anki a fair chance, I find I can study much more efficiently!
So I just gotta say... thanks for closing down
