Why don't one of you smart computer types make up a new website that basically does what smart.fm did. I would think this would be a decent business opportunity. Not everything that makes money is a paid site (what's that one thing that people seem to like that got kind of popular? Oh yeah, it's called The Facebook or something.)
Anyway, I would think that you'd have a customer base already and if you were just as good as the original smart.fm you'd probably end up making the new iknow obsolete. I don't know what the start up costs would be for something like this but I would think that you could have a bunch of advertisers and a few donations in short order. Facebook even has an ex-smart.fm users page. Anyway, I'm a computer moron so I couldn't do it but it seems like this is opening a door for someone.

"Khatzumemo" (now called something else, but let's face it, Khatzumemo is a cooler name) was written by one guy. It has an SRS algorithm but lacks basically every feature of Smart FM.
What does Smart FM have that Khatzumemo doesn't? I think the main feature is organizing content into "goals" (Khatzumemo calls this "decks"), but perhaps most importantly it lacks the ability for a user to subscribe to a set and track progress through it.
Was it possible to have a private goal in Smart FM? I don't think so. That's interesting from a design standpoint. Another thing about the design - it was possible to tell which goals were popular to give some idea of their quality as most were created by ordinary users. Some goals were contributed by Smart FM itself - this includes all of the bigger goals like Core 2000.
The other thing Khatzumemo lacks is a sophisticated GUI like iKnow! has. Maybe that isn't so important.

Fabrice, you could create a Smart.fm clone as your business plan!
Anki already does a lot of what Smart.fm does. You can create a deck and other people can download it, study it, and track their progress. What you can't do is (easily) share any deck containing audio or video. It's still possible, you just can't use the sharing services the developer provides. Which is understandable.
I am surprised the businesses traditionally associated with language learning did not notice what iknow was doing and improve on it. Especially in Japan where they are known for taking already existing products and making them better.

I think one nice thing about smart.fm is that it's for initial learning more so than anki. What I mean is that in order to get through one word you are quizzed multiple times in a session and then the process is repeated when your quizzed again. With anki once you remember it once it skips to the next day. For things like kanji I think this is good but I don't know if it works as good for vocab (maybe it does I haven't tried yet). I got "japanese sensei for my iphone which uses the same sentences as smart.fm so I'm going to keep using that to help with vocab. Anyway, I kind of liked it as a break from anki (I wish you could hide the progress bar on the left though as that's sometimes a bit of cheating).

I know that the sentence audio is posted on the core 2000 deck download information on anki, that's where I got mine.
I'm just wondering if I can get my hands on the core6k, I've never been able to figure out this whole Kore thing >.<

Actually I think the whole AJATT deck building SRS thing works best if you do it yourself. But I would like tutorials on how to add pictures, movies and sound etc. I'm REALLY bad at making decks. XD

I wonder whether we'll still be allowed to distribute the Core stuff. The permission was informal, and posted on the now-deleted Developer's Forum.
In the same thread, they also mentioned plans to release their own content as CC-BY, but they never actually did it. I was disappointed =(

To be honest I was kind of wondering why it was free in the first place. Especially after they started making money charging for their iphone applications, it seemed to me that would be a wake-up call. Maybe that is what triggered the changeover and it just took a while to come to fruition.
I think they will do fantastically with the paid model, especially in Japan. Also if it catches on educationally I'm sure there are small private companies teaching English somewhere that would pay an institutional fee and construct course-lists for their students to use for class. The English education industry in Japan is MASSIVE and there are plenty of untapped revenue streams that I am sure cerego is itching to dig into.

I've fixed the Smart FM Anki plugin to work with the current API, if anyone needs it. It's not perfect but I've just used it to download a lot of vocab, sentences and audio.

Great thanks, will give it a go tomorrow (when i have proper internet).
Any info on how/why it broke? I assumed smart fm just completely stopped offering their public API in preparation of their paid services (where it makes no sense to allow random users to download their media).
Suppose I could just diff the two plugin files, but I don't know anything about Python..hmm
