Good read, but some opinions are looking from one side, Japan has always been different, it can't be judged from the outside.

First off I hate seeing this more than anything. And by saying that you are also judging Japan =D. Japan is just as different as Palestine is, as France as is Sweden as is as any other nation and nationality. I've done countless classes in university where both the teacher and students aim to discuss how 'different' Japan is from the rest of the world. It's a load of academic masturbationatoryistical orientalist bullshit. If anything it's a generational trend.
I'm noticing this sort of thing in Australia too. Why aren't there any articles about Australians doing this? Why does Japan have to get all the attention.
