I noticed this word today when I rikaichan'ed over a kanji I was reviewing:

承る　うけたまわる

and I thought, "hey that's a pretty long word!"

does anyone know what the longest reading for one kanji is?

I might be able to tell you that tonight, looking up the data for all possible KUN readings.

As a side-note, the KANJIDIC database used to have some super-long readings indicated in the ON fields, for the "centimeter" and "kilometer" compounds which you may still see probably in software using non-recent versions of KANJIDIC / EDICT. But when I checked the latest files from Jim Breen it looks like this was an error and the katakana reading is no more indicated as ON reading.

Side note#2: I think the longest kanji compound I saw in JMDICT (dictionary from Jim Breen) was 24 kanji long!

It only ties with 承る, but the reading for 慮り does not sound like something you would normally expect for a kun-reading.

政 is also 5 kana. All three of these seem to be compounds of two or more native Japanese words that were at some point attached to single kanji.

Column 1 : length of kun reading
Column 2 : the kun reading found in one of the kanji of the compound
Column 3 : the kanji corresponding to the kun yomi
Column 4 : the compound in which the kun reading and associated kanji appear
Column 5 : the full compound reading

Looks like 5 is the maximum length for a kun-yomi (without the verb/adjective endings etc.) These are all the kun readings of this length that could be found in the standard JMDICT file from Jim Breen (out of approx. 130000 entries).

And here's the grand trournament champions of compound length from JMDICT. Surprisingly the winner is a kanji compound, and the katakana contestants only place third!

It's more of a "compound compound", which can be broken down into smaller compounds.

Don't tell me that it's some kind of type where they've accidentally put ヘ instead of へ or something. They should all be katakana.
