As for today:
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/koohii.com Wrote:Country Percent of Site Traffic

Japan 48.5%

United Kingdom 10.6%

Portugal 6.8%

United States 5.7%

Lithuania 4.0%

India 3.2%

Germany 2.5%

OTHER 18.8%
It surprises that Portugal and Lithuania rank so high considering their relatively small population.

Wait. So almost half of "you" is cheating your way to fluency by being in Japan?!?

That does it! I'm gonna cheat too Tongue

Here are the Google Analytics which should be more accurate:

The server's Awstats should be even more accurate as it can count the server hits. Awstats agrees with Google Analytics' country list, only Australia shifts under France (but they are very close anyway).

Portugal comes at position 26 on G.A., after Vietnam, Hungary, Argentina... not that it matters as they are all under 0.5 % of total visits.

That Google Analytics chart comes actually closer to the the impression I get when browsing the member list. Too bad, I was hoping for stunning revelations from our Lithuanian and Portuguese members.

The two countries with the most Japanese learners don't even make the list!

...because they already know their kanji.

Which reminds me, when I went to Korea it seemed like people could write Chinese characters pretty well if I asked, but the writing I saw rarely used them. Does anyone have any idea about how many characters the average Korean knows? (I'm sure it varies a LOT by age)

I know almost nothing about the Korean language.

According to Wikipedia the school students in South Korea learn a total of 1800 hanja (I find it interesting that one of the listed sources for that section of the article is a book called The Writing on the Wall: How Asian Orthography Curbs Creativity), which seems to correspond to level 3 of the Korean hanja proficiency test. However, this site says that very few people pass level 1, which only has a little more than half the kanji in level 1 漢字検定, and this blog post suggests that in practice very few school students end up attaining even a basic level of hanja proficiency.

Not really. It's all variations of Tobberoth.

Are the ratings actually based on unique vistors/IPs?

Cos the high rating for UK could be down to certain users (me and icecream?) coming to the forum over and over again.. Tongue ditto Sweden, Portugal etc.

I only star the REALLY good ones Wink

Actually, there is one thing I should reveal... I am Portuguese, but I have been living in Japan for a year and a half, and i forgot to change the location in my profile, so those first figures might be slightly incorrect.... :p

I'm sure that's a factor, but I'd guess that it's more to do with the fact that this is an English language site.

The statistics are based on IP traffic, though.

Also, Fabrice's avatar scares me.

lousicha Wrote:Just curious, Fabrice: how many people do you estimate have finished RTK1 with this site?
I couldn't give an estimate because there's too many variables. Not everyone uses the flashcards on this site, probably less than 50% of the users edit stories versus just viewing, etc.

astendra Wrote:The statistics are based on IP traffic, though.
Correct. I'm guessing Google Analytics, Awstats, and all the other website statistics tools use "geo location" to map IPs to cities/countries.

Well, it's an evil Leprechaun.

Cool, Canada is 4th. That makes me happy in my modest Canadian way Tongue. Especially since in Winnipeg, we only have 3 Japanese families running our Japanese cultural center Tongue.

I think it's cool, it reminds me of Golden Ax. Ah, so many fond memories of acking and slashing through monsters...

(and between us, it's funnier than the G.O.D. phase)

I think "phase" is a little overstated considering I used the "G.O.D." (Good Old Developer) joke and forum title for like, two days.

I'm not sure I'll keep this avatar, but I'm having a little nostalgia fit. It's from a "Leprechaun" mod that I made for Doom 2, like twelve years ago. Hence the pixellated look. That particular image is the replacement for the face that appeared in the status bar. It gets bloodier as health approaches zero Smile

Oh, wow, do you have this mod available for download, by any chance? I'm interested in it Smile Did it contain new levels, and monsters and weapons, maybe, or just the "Leprechaun" head replacement instead of the original one?
