Where to find Japanese contacts online?

#1
Pretty much this topic's title.
I want to find Japanese contacts online to whom I can talk to. I tried mylanguageexchange.com but I don't pay so it kinda sucks for me (can only send Hi!s). Two days ago I tried sharedtalk.com but I don't have any replies yet (I sent messages to like 10 people). Today I decided to try japan-guide.com but unfortunately no one there wants to learn Portuguese...
So... I am now open to suggestions. Smile

I've had some luck with japan guide classifieds: http://www.japan-guide.com/local/jp/?aCAT=2

It might take some patience though. Maybe 1 out of 10 people that I would contact actually write me back, and of those, many of them would just suddenly start ignoring me after a few emails back and forth.

But, I have managed to find several good, long term friends there.

Oh sorry, you said that you already tried that ^^;

By the way, you mentioned "no one wants to learn portuguese".
So talk in Japanese Smile
Or if they wanna talk english, your english seems good enough...

I could be mistaken, but isn't lang-8.com just about posting something in your learning language for natives to correct it? How would I actually meet somebody there?
Speaking english at japan-guide.com seems to me the best solution at the moment so I'll try it out.
Thanks.

I've actually also had people recommend lang-8 perhaps it has a social media side to it as well?

Try googling "mixxer" I have found a few good contacts using that free site Big Grin

It does. Definitely worth checking out.

Another free site that you might try is http://www.palabea.net/

Rest assured you can meet Japanese at lang-8 whom you can talk to, but you are right that is not exactly the aim of the site.

Why not try the voice or text chat? There are even chat rooms on there that usually have a few Japanese in them. I don't think many people bother sending messages, since they can get chatting right away using the other features. You're probably going to have to talk to a lot of people before you find a long-term friend, and as Zarxrax said, that can take a long time through e-mail. If you go on at peak Japanese time, you could talk to 10 people at once if you wanted to on ST. You can drop the uninteresting people, and exchange Skype IDs with the ones you get along with. I just wish more language exchange sites would adopt the same model.

OMG, thanks so much for the lang-8 recommendation, I didn't know about the "social site" part of it, I'm talking with 2 japanese girls I met through there atm.
tried Mixxer already but the interesting matches I found had almost abandoned their profiles.
I'll try Palabea.
Thank you very much
