Found an interesting explanation:

Quote:出血には赤字という意味もあります。実際はともかく赤字を覚悟した大サービスと言うことです。

たぶん赤字が血の赤を連想させるとか「身銭を切る＞身を切る＞出血」というような連想で生まれた文句だと思います。

The last part sounds logical in terms of etymology until you realise we talk about companies haemorrhaging money in english too too.

Today I got an e-mail that made me laugh, and I learned a new word in it. I booked a flight within Japan, but it ended up being cancelled because of a typhon, so I want my money back. After calling the airline itself, they advised me to contact the site where I ordered the ticket. I e-mailed them, and this was their response.

ご依頼の払戻の件ですが航空会社に手続きが完了いたしました。

大変お手数ですがお客様のご入金先（金融機関名、支店名、口座名義名）をメールにてお知らせ頂きます様何卒宜しくお願い致します。

It just had me laughing because the keigo and kanji use is so ridiculously over the top--especially when you're responding to a foreigner who must have made some Japanese mistakes in his original e-mail.

Anyway, I learned the word 何卒 （なにとぞ）, meaning "Please, kindly, by all means, etc."

I'd say the only over the top things there are the 有難う御座います and possibly the 宜しく. Everything else is pretty standard. Also, keigo is standard whenever talking to a customer.

If you want over the top, it would be something like:

何時も御利用頂きまして誠に有難う御座います。

御依頼乃払戻乃件ですが航空会社に手続きが完了致しました。

大変御手数ですが御客様乃御入金先（金融機関名、支店名、口座名義名）をメールにて御知らせ頂きます様何卒宜しく御願い致します。

I just learned that those stone lanterns that you see all the time in gardens and shrines are called　灯籠（とうろう).

Posting because it's so weird that I've never known the name of them, even though I've seen thousands upon thousands of them. Especially, there's that shrine in Nara near 東大寺, which has thousands upon thousands of them. I've been there three times but I can't remember the name of it, haha.
