Japanese Reality TV Shows - do they exist?

#1
Have been wondering this for a while. Stuff like Big Brother, The Apprentice, Project Runway, X Factor.

I remember seeing that the The Apprentice originated in Japan, but it seems they haven't made another. I'm after stuff with normal people not タレント.

I think the idea for Big Brother originated in Japan:

Otherwise good question - I'd like to know too.

What I really want to see is Japanese Idol. Can't believe this doesn't exist in the country from which karaoke originated.

oh wait I think this fits in the category of reality tv show except it's only one episode:
http://www.soku.com/search_video/q_%E4%B...8%E3%83%81

I thought it was really good, I actually cried at the end cause I felt like i understood how sad it was to leave. 2 Geinin who are both part a conbi... called heisei something something home-stayed in africa. It was funny and interesting and sad at the end.... I recommend!
I became such a fan of Tokui (not the one from chutoriaru though I like that tokui a lot too)

this is the episode when kano (geinoujin or geinin) goes to philipines where it's all dangerous... It endedup being more interesting than I thought it would be. I thought Kano was the perfect choice even though at first I thought it would be sorta flat because he's so...

Wow, just happened to start watching the reality show Ainori by chance but now Im hooked. Im watching the Africa edition. Has anyone seen this? I especially love the part where the Zomahoun flips out of the complete stupidity of the contestants. One guy didnt even know there were countries in Africa before coming. I tried to find it on youtube but was unsuccessful. I did however find the bio they did on Zomahoun. I definitely recommend taking a look at this guy. Very inspirational.

It's a not real Japanese game show, but there's a US reality show called 'I Survived a Japanese Game Show' and both seasons were pretty good, IMHO. As a bonus, the host speaks in Japanese about half the time.

If there were real Japanese shows like the fake one (Maji de!) in that show, I'd love to know about them.

Also, isn't there are library show where they tried not to make noise while doing stupid things in a library?

well, you can find a bunch from this list:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rea...n_programs

... but it seems like most of the japanese ones on that list are either fairly old or realllllly old, and the list isn't complete. so, there were japanese idol shows it seems, but that was in the 80's...

there's also this: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9E%E...E%E8%99%8E
which is dragon's den, it started in Japan, apparently.

gaia's dawn from AJATT's recent post http://www.alljapaneseallthetime.com/blo...c-19912011 seems to be close too, sorta half documentary, half reality type thing.

but yeah, wow that nasubi thing. i'm really disgusted, yet strangely drawn to try & find it.

i love ainori!!! Big Grin

Korean Idol and Korean X-Factor are huge here in Taiwan! They're pretty much identical to the Western versions; same music, same editing, same little sentimental stories before people sing..only extra thing is, they have to do a dance routine as well as sing (cos all popstars in asia dance) Smile

Even though I cant understand what everyone's say, it's obvious what's going on - these types if shows are sooo formulaic!

Now a huge part of these shows is watching people make a fool of themselves singing badly, and watching peoples dreams being shattered after being told "NO your voice is terrible"! Now I'm thinking - would people be willing to humiliate themselves on TV like this in Japan? and would viewers be comfortable watching it?

I know Japan has game-shows where people humiliate themselves, but it's done in a comical way; same as comedians like Hard-Gay. But doing it in a serious way, with people crying and those emotional video packages ("my mum just died of cancer - I'm doing this for her) maybe wouldn't work in the land of Tatemae. Same with shows like Big Brother, where you have to lay yourself out bare in front of millions on viewers 24/7; Is that the reason these shows don't exist in Japan?
