Hey guys I'm back for an update. This time around I won't be including my stats for various reasons. (I have re-worked my srs pace/decks now. I only have 3 decks. I add around 100-200 vocab a day if possible and I add high-context srs cards for my sentence deck. But only a few a day as I'm experimenting with that particular format.)
But let me start of on the things I can't do in Japanese just yet.
I can't speak 100% fluidly, I still have trouble with this. It's not that I can't say certain things right, I just need to copy more from what I hear at a certain pace(Nowadays what I do when I listen to a show or a song, I copy word for word at the pace they are saying the words/phrases. This overall just get's me used to the pace/speed. What I do nowadays is set a daily goal/weekly goal/monthly goal and overall goal in terms of speaking. And overall with my japanese studies. I do this, so that I can measure what I'm capable of and once I accomplish it, I set more. I find this more effective then just thinking about my main goal(fluency). Which can be vague at times, so goals help me think straight on how well I'm improving or not.
Second is writing, it's not a problem in terms of actually writing for kanji/kana. It's more of just getting more smoother with the writing in terms of journals and other writing sources. For this I've been researching books on writing, but I've yet to buy them just yet. For this, I think it's pretty simple what I must do. Keep writing, write about anything. Both online and both on paper. I will set goals for myself on this.
Now for the things I can do is. Reading and understanding has reached good levels. Anki states I know 2000-2500+ kanji in terms of retention and understanding. My speaking skills have improved quite a lot. This is due for a lot of immersion, reading and srsing(But still lacking). In terms of media, whenever I watch anime, news, movies, read mangas, novels I can understand/read pretty much all of it. There are occasional still the vocab/I screw up the readings. But it's only natural. For this, my new goals are getting more used to reading novels and from different sources. Getting more better at reading and overall just keep reading enjoyable material or anything that grabs me. I like to watch older movies in japanese. It's fun to see how different it is from modern japanese.
I'd say there hasn't really been all that much progress in these 5 months(gap between the last one), even though I have put in a lot of time. I think these 5 months have showed me that, I should srs less(I do it moderately now) and immerse/read more. Nowadays I'm experimenting around with the srs card formats so it can help me get better at japanese in terms of reading and the other skills(listening, speaking, writing)
I've learned that you just have to keep going. I love to experiment with my srs format cards and all, but in terms of learning and how to keep learning. We just have to keep going, keep immersing, srsing, reading, writing and anything else that will help us get closer to our goal for japanese or any other language.
