I really don't know how to start

#1
I'm confident if I see a example done of the cards I could do 3000 fine. I really want to start.

No ideas on how to use Anki cards. Do I add stories to every card? Do I write what Heisig is saying in the book on the card? I downloaded a deck on Anki, RTK1+3 deck I think it's called. If possible can anyone add screen shots of their first 30 cards or something. It would be much appreciated.

I've been staring at this book for a month already not sure how to approach it, I started yesterday by writing the kanji out of the book while reading what Heisig says about each one, then going back to look at each one to see if I can remember each one. Also, I'm not sure if I can remember all the primitives, is he going mention primitives again later in the book or is it something I should burn into my mind in the beginning.

I've read some of the topics and looked around the site, I get the idea but I can't start confidently if I know I might do it wrong. Sorry for being a dunce.

Try starting here on Reviewing The Kanji instead of Anki at least until you get used to it, and... read the guidelines in the book.

Picture the kanji stories in your mind, like for kanji 只 (only) you have two primitives 'mouth' and 'animal legs', you can picture a strange animal that has 'only' a mouth and small animal legs, walking around like a crab or something. Just picture that for minute while thinking about the link to the keyword 'only', so that when you think about 'only' the picture comes back in your mind.

The early primitives are very common so you shouldn't have to work hard to learn them.

Thanks for the speedy reply, I'll try to start on the website and see how it goes. One more question, can I just use website for all 2000+ kanji or is the Anki change required/better?

The website is quite fine for reviewing all of RTK. Switching to Anki is more for convenience if you're also using Anki for other things, or using it on your cell phone for example, but either way it's worth referring to the RevTK website for shared stories.

I'm actually finding the website more enjoyable/fun. I feel really lost when I touch Anki for some reason. You've been a really great help and your my most favorite person in the world right now. And many thanks! =p

I've decided to take it slowly and do 30 a day. And I found that Anki is linked to my RevTK so I'm going to use RevTK for just the cards and Anki for the review like you suggested. I'm going to look through some of my old Japanese manga/books to see if I can recognize some of them, I feel really cool.

Don't worry, Jenkoi, when I first started using Anki (for other things than RTK) I was pretty lost too. It takes some messing about with it to really figure out how it works. So I still use this site to review my kanji and I use Anki for the other stuff only. Can't be arsed to import as I don't know how it works in Anki anyway. Tongue Plus I've noticed Anki's space between reviews is slightly longer than the space between reviews for this website. So I fail more there. And I haven't figured out how to change anything but the space between initial reviews, not the later reviews.

Hi!

I use Anki with the shared RTK deck and I add my stories to the cards. The background of a card is white and I write the stories with white font so I only see the story on a card when I select it.

This is a screenshot of my deck. In the story the keyword is bold and the keywords/primitives of used elements are italic.

And here's how a card looks like.

I have Anki set up so that the "story" is hidden until I click the word "Story", as I wrote here: http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?p...9#pid40799

Don't forget that RTK Lite is an option, you don't need to do it, but be sure your aware of it. If you find that doing all 2k begins to feel like too much, switching to lite isn't a bad idea. You can always learn the rest later or through exposure.

Don't worry about taking it slow. I do 12 a day during the week (at least) and try for 25 on the weekend days. If you set your minimum requirement for the day too high, I've found that often you become demotivated and do nothing at all.

I've decided to do 12 as well. Doing 30 a day is way too much for me right now. My uncle in-law passed away yesterday and it's not working out with the usual two hours for 30 cards thing. Thanks for the advice.
