Is Anki necessary ?

#1
I have read quite a few posts about people that use Anki. Should I be using this too? Is there anything it does that this website doesn't?

This site is designed to be a Leitner type system (iirc...) designed specifically for Remembering the Kanji.

Anki is a supermemo-algorithm based SRS program that can be used in a similar fashion to this site, except specifically designed for everything!

Seriously, if you sit and thing "gee, this site helps me remember the kanji. I wish it could help me study anything outside the realm of RtK," then you should probably at least try out Anki.

No, it's not necessary, but a lot of people find it beneficial. So at least give it a shot (for a few weeks/months.. you're not gonna know if you like it or not in just a week), and see if it works for you.

Of course it's not necessary but it is a useful tool.

Okay, I know you can use it for other stuff besides Kanji. But it seems some people use this site and Anki for RemTK. My questions is more, what is a scenario where you would use both Anki and RevTK to complement RemTK?

You'd probably only use Anki or RevTK to go through RemTK.
Maybe you like the interface of the site. Maybe you started and got really far on the site, but don't feel like migrating it to Anki. Maybe you think the algorithm is better on RevTK than on Anki...?

I'd say it's mostly personal preference. You can use this site for your RtK studies and Anki for all your other studies. That's probably what people are doing when they're using both.

Anki doesn't require an internet connection which is cool.

I never used revtk study option. I just used the site to get story ideas. I put all the info into anki for review.

A common scenario, as far as I know, as that users continue to use the Study pages to get ideas, some to also edit stories, but will review in Anki. Since a lot of people now use Anki to review Japanese vocab, grammar and such, it makes sense that they want to use just one tool; hence they don't use the flashcard reviews on RevTK anymore.

Back when I created the site; mid 2005, having a premade RTK flashcard deck was a nice feature of RevTK. Today it's got not value whatsoever since the Anki website provides pre made decks for RTK.

I am not a fool and very much aware that the website's main attraction is, and always was the sharing of mnemonics/stories. Likewise, my future plans obviously are no longer revolving around the SRS/flashcard features. So I don't need to tell you to stick to this website for reviews.

With that said, while the RevTK flahscard users didn't grow much over the past couple years, it didn't lessen much either. There are still users who enjoy the presentation on this site, so use whichever you like for your reviews. Also keep in mind the website doesn't "lock you in". All your data is exportable.

Yeah, this could be confusing. Keep in mind that on RevTK there is a SRS with flashcard reviews, and there is the Study area. Logically, people can use one or both. As I explained above, a lot of people today use the Study area and use Anki as the SRS.

The main difference is this site uses the simpler Leitner approach, and the way you add cards and manage the "failed" cards. If you review for a while on this site, and try out Anki as well, you'll figure out by yourself which one best suits your needs.

True for first time users. Real attraction is the RTK Forum.

I personally went through all of RTK1 using the flashcards on this site. However, when I started RTK3, I decided to go with Anki, mostly because it also supported non-RTK kanji, and the ability to do offline reviews.

I continue to use stories on this site all the time though (obviously used it for all of RTK3 too). There is a pretty good sampling of non-RTK kanji stories, and those are very valuable.

As ファブリス points it out, it's good to have a single tool that can handle all of your reviews though.

Lol, ok. Obviously I was talking about the main site, in relation to the OP's question.

@the two rickrollers whose posts I deleted: way to hijack a thread with a completely off topic question. Just because there is "Anki" in the title doesn't mean it's a free for all Anki question mashup. (?_?)

Well thank you everyone for your input (its nice to see that the site creator is so active Smile). I think I am going to stick with this site for now, and see how it goes. I really like how everything is integrated here.
