Calibre Library

So anyone else here use Calibre? If so, do you know how to tell Calibre to download only metadata for specific fields? Like "Comments", for example. I guess I could ask at their forum, but I'd have to register and stuff.

Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. "Download only metadata" does the trick--at least, it adds a summary without messing up tags, cover, title, or author.

Edit 2: Ohh, customize plugins, uncheck boxes. ;p

Yeah I use it. It's quite powerful, and free, so I don't complain much. Ugly as hell as not at all intuitive though.

..OK, so I complain a little.

Best kindle management software there is though, and using acrobat + calibre you can get perfect conversion of PDF books to mobi (or epub), as far as I've discovered it's the only possible way.

I don't like the yellow bars on the side when I hide the tag/details browsers. But I like the cover browser.

Since getting my new computer I've caved and taken to using organizers/cover browsers for my media. Addictive.

By the way Blahah, I know you'd appreciate this: A batch APA/MLA citation generator for Calibre entries? They need a functionality like that. Well, not just those 2, but you get the picture. They could have a whole set you could pick from any number of, perhaps based on tags, such as: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e...ion_styles

Well, just in case someone else with lots of bibliography/citation requirements might find it useful: How to Generate MLA, APA, Chicago, or Any Other Style Bibliography from BibTex/BibDesk Files

New version of Calibre allows exporting of your books to .bib files, and there's now a standalone version of Zotero, though the Firefox extension version and OpenOffice plugin look useful all on their own.

A comment mentions BibDesk (OS X) has templates for MLA and whatnot. I've found some cross-platform bibtext manager stuff from SourceForge that looks pretty good also.

I'm gonna have to look into this. I just got my iPad last Friday and the difference between PDF and ePub became painfully obvious. I just never thought before about the reflow problem.

So what's the main use you get out of Calibre? It's very easy to transfer epub or PDFs just copy /paste or drag files into iTunes "Books" and then Sync, so I'm guessing it's something else. Are you converting books? Making your own Japanese books from online text?

ePub is great. I've been using Calibre to do conversion to ePub, with occasional tweaks via a program called Sigil.

I use Calibre as a database/catalogue with various tools for maintenance and manipulation. It became a necessity after a certain point. It's also got a lot of synching options, re: Apple (and others). http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthr...p?t=118559

At the moment I am organizing various papers and putting a system in place to make it easier to generate APA, &c. citations.

I can't stand iTunes so I only have it installed on my tm2 for when I need to sync my iPod (I used to use foobar2000 for this but I am too lazy to see if that still works for these newfangled iPod Touch things.)
