Hi,

I´ve got some troubles to read the text throughout an installation wizard of japanese software - about half the text is unreadable and displayed only with question marks, the other half is still legible Japanese. When I try to feel my way through the installation, the program-options and labels are mostly scrambled too.

I´ve never had any problems displaying Japanese on my computer (with windows vista) before and I would like to know if there are any other options to resolve this other than switching the computer´s system language to Japanese (which I´m very reluctant to try.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try launching it with Windows Applocale.

Thanks for your quick reply - this sounds very neat, but applocale doesn´t recognize the installation.exe as a valid application and therefore refuses to cooperate with me...

I forget where it is, but somewhere in the international settings or something, you can set the default language to non-regular endcodings to be Japanese.

Again, I'm not sure what this setting is or how to find it, but I know I've done it in the past and it solved my problems. I didn't even have to use applocale, ever

Did you install AppLocale per the instructions above? Because I used to have problems getting it to run anything until I installed it with those instructions. Although it could also be that I have a new machine.

Yeah last time I tried this I ended up breaking Windows or something. Something to do with ¥ symbols. I think it was when I changed non-Unicode locale in Control Panel. So since then I've been afraid to mess with it. AppLocale works for me though rarely needed--especially for install programs which're generally pretty intuitive. Or just go 'whole hog' and use Japanese as OS.

Applocale is a way of running a program using the default language to be Japanese. Before that came out, you had to change the system language to Japanese.

I did change the system language to Japanese in order to install certain... uh, games... but it's also a hassle sometimes. Every time I install an update for something like iTunes or Acrobat, it sees my system language as Japanese and then gives me a Japanese installation prompt and all that, along with Japanese ToS and instructions.
