Need Tech Help for My Asus G71

#1
Okay, need a little bit of help! I know this isn't a PC tech support forum, but you know... whatever.

Anyway I have an Asus G71 and yesterday it crashed in the morning. After rebooting I noticed it wasn't detecting the battery charger (it's always plugged-in). So now it's out of battery. I know the laptop itself still works, but it isn't charging. I've tried multiple sockets around the house to make sure it wasn't the problem. I've also tried it with the battery in and the battery out. One time I was able to make it work without the battery, but stupid ole me decided to put the battery in to see if it would still work. Nope.

I have tried plugging in the adapter/charger separately to a wall socket, and the light pops up to indicate it has power. Green, of course. Then when I plug it into the computer the light goes away and I still can't turn on the computer. I called Asus tech support and they told me to try it without the battery, and then concluded it was the adapter and I needed a new one. Well I wanted to try asking you guys what you thought before committing to a $70+ new adapter. I really need to use my laptop! How else can I play SCII?

Thankfully I backed-up my more important Word documents to Dropbox only the night before. I don't feel the crash event and the charger not working are related, but I felt the need to include it anyway.

Alright so, thanks for reading this. Maybe you can help? I won't hold my breath. Tongue

Might want to try forum.notebookreview.com if you're looking for alternatives.

Yeah, I second nest0r's recommendation. That's an excellent forum. If anyone can tell you what's wrong, they can. (And in excruciating detail...)

Thanks. Well I posted there, no response yet. New adapter will be at least $90. I would have rather liked a new Zune or some t-shirts. :|

Well it says to use the 90-XB06N0PW00040Y SKU if buying from Asus authorized retailers. That being said, there are a few notable differences. The one I need is 150W, this is 120W. The one I need is 7.7 amps, this is 6.32. Actually I don't know if those two things matter all that much to be honest. Lastly is the appearance, it doesn't have that hook for the end that plugs into the laptop. Hmm... Something says I should buy the Asus authorized one rather than a 3rd-party. Going to cost twice as much, though. Decisions.
