Problem with catching up on due cards

#1
Hey guys.
I apologize if this has been talked about before, but one of the difficult parts of SRS that is stressing me out at the moment are due cards. It simply seems that I cannot keep up with the amount of cards that are due. I temporarily stopped doing reviews because I was trying to finish the book (and I did thank lord), but now every day I have like 130 more cards added to a pile that just keeps growing. I don't seem to have the time to finish them, but I refuse to begin KO20001 until I have. Has anybody just quit reviewing and gone ahead to sentence mining? Is that even logical? I'm sorry if this sounds quite stupid, I just can't keep up the pace that fabrice's program is asking of me!
I should probably know better.

You should do 130 reviews in about one hour. It's not huge when you think about it: half an hour in the morning, half an hour at night.

You cards need 2 weeks to get to stack 4 (mature stack), and then the reps are every month, then every 2 months.... So my advice would be to suck it up for two weeks (not that huge either). When you stop adding, the reviews decrease. So the more you add, logically, the more you have reviews. The hard part is to go to stack 3 (a week review), so if you ignore them, of course it will add up.

If you feel you can't handle only reviews without rushing, you can still use the RTK lite version (the most frequent 1000 RTK kanji). Using anki, or copying the list in the manage cards, custom add section.
Good luck!

Never stop doing reviews. But don't stress on not being able to do them all. If you can only get through half of your reviews in a day, it's not going to kill you. Just be sure to do some everyday. Being an SRS the workload will reduce the more you review.

If you want to start doing KO or whatever else, maybe you should just start small, a few new facts a day. Nothing wrong with going slow.

First of all breathe, It's OK to be "behind" in your reveiws. All you have to do is get The system to work for you not the other way around. To do this I suggest picking an amount of time that you want to spend on kanji and stick to it. That way you won't worry about the piling up.

When reviewing big stacks I recommend starting easy and working towards harder cards. For example, simply work from the cards in the farthest box the work back until all the reveiws are done and then start reviewing forgotten cards. I will however warn you that having a bucket load of failed kanji is biggest thing that will damper your motivation for kanji because it takes a lot of time to relearn stories. So, review your failed cards every time you hit 10 new failed cards

Good luck with the massive reveiws XD.

Stop adding material for a while. If your reviews are overwhelming you, you've added too much material in a short amount of time.

Simple stop adding stuff, review review review until you get it down to manageable numbers, then start adding in moderation again.

While I second what people have said here, I know not doing all the reviews is easier for some than others.

Once upon a time I was that person that saw something and though oh no! not done! must do or I am lazy! etc etc. I learned. eventually though.

I now on de Island time, brah! Really, I dont care about the size of any pile I do what I feel I can do without getting dressed over it and I am a lot happier for it.

You'll probably regret it if you let it get out of control. I had to start my deck again after leaving it for ages, and it's time that could've been spent learning more vocabulary. It's going to be quicker in the long run and better for your studies if you just stick it out. Try playing some motivating music while you review Smile

Heisig reviews are probably the most tedious of all though, I've got to say. I really think it's worth investing in an iPod or something if you don't already have one. If you have any commute time, then you can use it to get your reviews out of the way. You can also fit in a quick 5-10 reviews if you get a spare minute or two throughout the day. I tend to spontaneously pick it up when I'm at home as well. I was always behind before I got it, and I don't think I'd survive SRS without it. Instead of taking time out of my day when I'm at home, it usually fills time when I'm on the train Smile

Another thing I've been doing lately is getting up-to-date before I go to bed. You can even review some early if you're feeling adventurous. This means when I get up in the morning, I'm looking at a much less intimidating number.
