Enka music still charts on the Oricon top lists, so that might be a good place to start.

Not sure how much it counts as traditional, but I'm a big fan of 梶芽衣子.

Since I've first heard the theme from Final Fantasy X Rikki is the only recognizable folk artist from Japan for me Smile Whole soundtrack was superb, arguably the best in the series and I've never even played the game.

She has a few other good songs.

Some great cds I'd like to recommend:

art du shakuhachi - Katsuya Yokoyama (shakuhachi solos and duos)
Shomyo - chants liturgiques de la secte Shingon (buddhist chants)
Masters of Zen (traditional folk band).

All DirectLy available if I recall.

I find Okinawan traditional music way more awesome than that of the rest of Japan. Maybe when I'm not at work I'll try to find some to post.

Though, I still like other traditional music. If you're in Japan, check out some Japanese theater--it's a good place to hear it done live. I recommend bunraku and kabuki. You can skip on the kyogen and noh, haha.

I am also a huge fan. I have lossless vinyl rips of きょうの我が身はand 全曲集. 女の呪文 is my probably my favorite song by her.

I love 演歌 but more or less I like the American soul sounding stuff versus the country sounding stuff.

Also, I love 渚ゆう子 but her stuff is extremely hard to find. If someone had a mp3 of 何処へ it would make my life complete for the time being Wink

Can you find these on Grooveshark? Is it "big in Japan"? Grooveshark is really nice to share playlists. And you can also "watch" what your friends listen to, which is a nice way to discover more music. Just an idea Smile

I thought this was interesting. According to Japanese Wikipedia, やなわらばー means 「いたずらっ子」in Okinawa dialect. (やな=イヤな/ダメな)(わらばー=子供)

You guys have just opened a brand new door for me O_O. These songs are awesome. I've been losing interest in J-pop and j-rock for the last few months and have been hoping to listen to some new stuff (haha ironic use of the word new Tongue).
