Kanzen 2Kyu Grammar Test 4

#1
Hi again ^^

This time I'm having trouble with two things.

1. Question 2(2), 2(3), and 2(5), where the answers are 気味 (tendency to), げ (そう) and っぽい (-like) respectively. I really don't see the difference, particularly between 気味 and っぽい, in the context of these answers - could they not be interchanged?

2. Question 4(4)- what is the difference here between 燃えにくい and 燃えがたい, and why is the answer the former and not the latter in this context?

Let's get げ out of the way first -- this is used about how other people are feeling (that you've deduced from looking at them). So it doesn't work for 2(2) or 2(5) which are both talking about yourself. (Also for 2(5) the form doesn't permit it, it would have to be なので.)

That leaves you with 2(2) and 2(5) and 気味 and っぽい. The form says it's got to be that way round, because again for 2(5) to be 気味 it would have to be なので, and contrariwise the て form of っぱい is っぽくて. I don't think that there's a major difference in meaning that would make one work and not the other, it's just that one has adj-na inflection and the other has adj-i inflection.

See this comment by magamo which discusses exactly this question.

I recommend that you post these questions all in the same thread. No need for a new thread for every practice test in KM2.

Where are you getting these tests by the way?
I am trying to prepare for the same test and this is my weakest area.

Its a green covered grammar book available in Japan and overseas from some places (not sure where though).
