Speech Recognition

So does anyone use Japanese voice commands on their computer? I can't get Japanese to work on my PC w/o switching the entire OS to Japanese, apparently, anyone else have luck with that? Seems like you should be able to customize commands in any language/sound.

There's also Dragon Naturally Speaking, anyone tried that?

I've tried it. Pretty good, not perfect. Don't know if it does Japanese though.

It does. That's why I asked.

I've played around with voice recognition in Vista (音声認識システム) and it was fun. It seemed to work just about as well as it did in English (which means you'll be repeatedly saying 番号表示 and then いち/に/さん/よん and then OK over and over :p). I had to stop using it after a few days though: The roommate figured out how to voice command my computer to shut down.

You sure? Last time I searched on Amazon the latest Dragon available was from 2005. The newest alternative I could find at the time was called AmiVoice, but I wasn't willing to gamble $200 or so to see if it's usable. The original cost isn't that expensive, but shipping and taxes don't help.

I'm wondering how it will efficiently deal with kanji conversion and if it's usable with non-native pronunciation. Maybe it could be a good way to practise pitch accent and clear enunciation. I'll try one of them eventually.

I'm typing (as always) with NaturallySpeaking 10 right now, and it is pretty good. It's not so great for your colloquial IMs, but it can actually be faster than typing with "proper" English. I've been meaning to install version 11. I had nightmares using version 8 though, which is why I didn't even consider Dragon 2005 Japanese.

Yes I'm sure--we both are, hence your mentioning the Japanese version. What I'm not sure about and what I'm asking is about how DNS handles Japanese, in every way 'how' can be meant. ;p

Seems like it's not worth the bother, so far. I just wanted to customize, piecemeal, voice commands, in French and Japanese, but it seems I have once again found some undiscovered area of common software. ;p

in older versions (don't know about the current one) voice commands were kinda separate, and didn't really use the default (English) model, so I used to use Japanese for commands and English for text dictation, worked ok, but I never tried Japanese text dictation.
