Taking an 'adding cards' break?

#1
If I kept up my reviews for a month or two, but didn't add any cards, would it be detrimental to my studies?

Thing is, I have SATs and AP Bio tests concurrently to study for until November and well, Japanese is just losing more and more time to the point that I barely get my reviews done every day.

Or should I just stick it out and just try to add really few like 10 a day?

I'm just worried that when I start adding again, there's gonna be a huge gap from the old cards I put in and the new ones. The old ones being 1000 in quantity.

No, just keep up your reviews of what you already have and you should be ok. I like to term it a "holding pattern". You find you can roll right back into learning. My little "guide to beginner Japanese" even encourages this in a way as you stop adding one part of the language (kanji for instance) and go to another (vocabulary or grammar). I just assume one is still reviewing all the old stuff while doing that.

However, don't forgot experience Japanese with music, books, movies, etc. That's not studying, that's being entertained in the target language.

Yeah, as nuke said, more than anything make sure you keep on top of your reviews. Not adding for a while is fine.

And don't worry about the gap, we all have gaps.

I agree that it's not a problem. After all, in a relatively short time, you won't have any new cards to add. Smile

Speaking of taking an adding cards break, I'm doing just that for this semester because I just switched Majors from Nutrition to business, so I need time to study XD.

I plan to take a ten day break from adding cards when I reach the half point (that'll be in three days) so I can really stabilize the first half of the book before I continue.

I think as long as one continues to do the reps it could be a good thing.

I don't think 10 is really few. As I see it, really few would be 3 or less.

You may want to continue to add 1 card a day, just to keep in the habit. I've found that once I get out of the habit of adding new material, it's hard to get back into it.
