Lately I've been coming across a lot of shows that discuss kanji, the Japanese language, or memory, that would fit right in with a lot of the discussions that go on here. I just finished watching one such show, and thought I would start this thread, where we can alert each other to shows like this that we've discovered, and give each other a heads up if there's something coming up. Two that have been going on weekly for a while are:
みんなでニホンGO
NHK Sogo Thursdays 10-10:50PM
This is a discussion show led by various tarento, with studio audience participation, and offsite interviews. This week they talked about the new Joyo kanji, particularly 鬱, its origins and its seldom known meanings, followed by a historical discussion about when Kanji was on the verge of being abolished in the 1920s.
日本人の知らない日本語
Yomiuri Terebi and subsidiaries - Thursdays 11:58p-12:38a
A drama starring Riisa Naka as a Japanese language teacher for 外国人. Her students stump her with questions about Japanese's idiosyncracies, and she goes about finding out how to answer them, while the episode revolves around those very idiosyncracies. Good for a few laughs and some unusual insight into the Japanese language.
