With Kanji? I didn't know that they could fit Kanji characters on those DS games.

I kinda want it! But the starters suck :/

Actually they're cool but the evos just suck.

Most DS games use kanji. Dragon Quest IX even has furigana over all of them.

You bet I'm gonna get it! Big Grin

I am a little worried about the game's compatibility with a european DSi, though. According to Play Asia:

Quote:No Region Protection
Some "DSi Enhanced" titles are region locked on DSi Consoles.
At worst, I guess it's possible to play pokemon b&w on a DS or DS lite... I'll know for sure in about 4 days.

As for the kanji feature, it got me very excited when I first heard of it. But sadly enough, I will have to use the kana-only mode until I reach a decent level. I'm used to it anyway, having played Heart Gold for the last few months... Wink

PS: the starters' evos could be worse !

Glad they finally included a kanji option.

I wanted it but didn't think I would get it since I dislike only hiragana, but now that I know there are kanji I will probably import it. Also there's a beaver and a fire pig as a starter, and I really want them.

iMat72,

An American DSi can play a Japanese DS game as long as it's not downloaded from DSi ware. So you can totallyimport it no problem.

I wonder if in the future if Pokemon names will be written in 漢字??? That would make it more interesting...but considering the names it's not likely.

Well, I play a japanese game (heart gold) on my DSi too, but what got me worried this time was this "DSi enhanced, possible region lock" thing. Maybe I worry too much. Wink

Highly unlikely. It would make it harder for the creators to come up with puns, and besides, the tradition of using katakana has deep roots. That's why the monsters' names in the latin alphabet are always in uppercase... :p

Dude, don't underestimate yourself! Remember the golden rule: S+1!! Yourself +1, if you keep playing hiragana, you'll never get better ^^ And I can tell you, Kanji makes your life easier!! (if you did RTK ofcourse)
I think you should at least try beginning with kanji, and if you understand too little halfway through start over. xD
This game will take you to the next lvl! woohoo!

Btw I love the starters! And all pokemon look very nice I think. The 3th generation was the worst, all starters sucked and all pokemon aswell. But 4th was nice again, and 5th gen rules!
I can't choose which starter I'll take... Maybe the fire pig, since it's second evolution is funny and awesome! ^^

btw we should make a wifi-kanji-koohii-tournament in the near future. When our Pokemon are around lvl 30 or so. ^^ we can all manage the details right here on the forums right? Winner gets a copy of one of heisig's books! ^^ (or something xD)

That's the thing, I'm around kanji 1250 in RTK1... Surely it would be pointless to play in kanji mode and not be able to understand 80% of all compounds, as opposed to reading everything in kana... Am I wrong ?

It is possible to switch from kana to kanji during the game though. That way, you are not "trapped" in kana or kanji world until you start a new game! Wink

I have to disagree here! The 3rd generation was pretty awesome, and probably closer in spirit to the first two gens. Then again, maybe it's because I played pokemon ruby so much back in the days. I even almost completed the national dex...

Speaking of which. Will anyone here try to complete the pokedex in black & white? With more than 500 monsters, it is becoming increasingly harder to "catch'em all" ! Wink

Seconded!

Didn't know that! All the more reason to try in Kanji first iMat! ^^

I always try to complete the normal pokedex before doing the league. ^^ That way I train all new pokemon at least once, get to play with them all a little bit, and so I also get to know them a bit better, thus creating sympathy for them.
I did it with Blue version, Silver version, and Pearl version. -> Meaning I played Sapphire, yes, but I didn't train all pokemon back then. -> Meaning, having created less sympathy for them, and even up until today I don't feel comfortable around 3th gen Pokemon xD.
So we found the reason! Hahaha! Though generally I like almost all Pokemon of the 5th gen I've seen up until now! In contradiction with the 4th gen, of which I only liked about 60% and "got used to" the rest while playing with them. ^^
(except for carnivine and Bronzong, which for some reason I even now dislike. >,<')>

Oh, I will definitely do that. But it will only be occasional at first, unless I realize I can magically decipher any compound!

Mesqueeb Wrote:I always try to complete the normal pokedex before doing the league.
Now that's what I call bravery. But you must always beat the league before all the legendary pokemons are unlocked, so...yeah. But maybe I'll try your method out one day!

A negative note for once : in black & white, your pokemon won't follow you around like in HG/SS. I loved this feature... Sad

Based on the VERY few DSi only DS games and games with DSi enhancements, we should be fine. I'm lucky because I can play DSi only games with my Japanese DSi. Big Grin

I heard they are adding ~120 so that would mean 620 pokemon! XD
I disliked a lot of the 4th gen and a lot of this current gen but there are also some pretty darn cool ones like the eagle (Eagle= best pokemon ever) and an eletric/bug pokemon.

We should exchange codes. ^_--☆

I have to admit, I haven't played Pokemon since the Blue/Red/Gold/Silver era (back before I even knew a thing about Japan XD), but the sheer fact that I know some Japanese now and that they're gonna use kanji really piques my interest.

Bah, I wish I had more time to play videogames nowadays Sad

I'm really looking forward to playing this ^_^ I pre-ordered Black.

But seriously, it uses kanji? Where does it say/show that? Or do you need to buy a special version or something(I don't have a DSi...)?

Excited about this game, my ds lite was out of commission since I dropped it a year ago. But when I heard about this game I got my geeky (geekier?) friend to open it up and solder back on the piece that broke off.

The screenshots don't show any furigana, I hope they have the option especially considering the game is aimed at kids. Should be a challenge for me, since I'm still 2 weeks away from finishing rtklite, and have only a handful of readings down so far.

No furigana actually, it's either kana+kanji or full kana. As I said before, you can change this setting whenever you want (at least if I read the official website correctly, it's in japanese so...don't take my word for it Wink). And yukamina, no special version is needed.

gyuujuice Wrote:I heard they are adding ~120 so that would mean 620 pokemon! XD
Wow, already. We are very far away from pokemon yellow, aren't we? (that's how I started Wink)

TheVinster Wrote:I am an original Pokemon kind of guy, so I wish they'd cut out all these new Pokemon that I don't care about.
About that... These new versions will only feature new (5th gen) pokemon at the beginning. No zubats or geodudes in the caves for once! But of course, you will be able to trade old monsters or unlock them later on.
As much as I love the first two generations, I think this is a good idea. The franchise needed new blood, and this is an interesting way to renew the sense of discovery of the original red/blue (or green, for our japanese friends) versions. Monster design put aside...

Well... back to my kanji reviews! Big Grin

They finally got rid of geodude and zubat? I think I'll actually play this one. Famitsu also gave it a 40/40, but that score is really losing its meaning.

I only catch Geodudes zubat and tentacruel. (-.-)/

Don't get me started on those damn tentacool !

Anyway, I pre-ordered ポケモンホワイト earlier today. Not cheap but eh, it's study material (I love learning japanese, you can justify pretty much anything). Big Grin

But seriously, pokemon is the quintessential game for language learning. Don't believe me? Listen to this: from the 4th generation onward, the pokedex displays foreign entries for foreign pokemon. If you trade your japanese ズバット for a french geodude (I mean, racaillou), you will have a japanese AND a french entry for geodude. Cool uh?

Ok, maybe everyone already knew that...

WHAT?! That's awesome! I want a Chinese Castform now!

Doesn't this game come out this week? -Sigh, I don't want to compete with millions of kids for these games so I think I will wait a few weeks...er months.

{EDIT} Here is a link of all the new pokemon for those who can't wait to see them. Honestly, my reaction to a lot of them were "...WTF is THAT?!" Though there are a few good looking ones.

I don't know about chinese pokemon. Actually, is there a chinese version? Seems like a silly question but I never heard about it... Oh, and korean characters are not currently supported in japanese/american/european versions. Maybe it will change in b&w?
