Two questions. They may or may not be answered in heisig so bear with me.

1) When you have a character with road in it, you draw what's 'on' the road first, then road primitive, right?

2) This will take pictures to explain. My mother is Chinese and speaks/reads fluent Chinese. She saw me writing that primitive and told me I was doing it wrong. Basically, the way she writes it is this:

Is this bad? I've gotten into the habit of doing that, but I'm not sure if it's right... I mean, my mom is Chinese... but I dunno. I'm not sure.

I was going to say that maybe kanji stroke order and hanzi stroke order are different, but Rehzhe's link suggests otherwise. I played with かきとりくん on my DS when I was doing Heisig, and (from memory) the road is always at the end. Given that this is marketed as a tool for Japanese schoolkids, you'd assume they have the stroke order correct.

Here's that radical, as written by a Japanese person (left) and me (right). The left one looks pretty close to the stroke diagram that Renzhe posted, and mine looks similar to kazelee's.




Your bottom stroke on yours shouldn't be so flat, and the left part should be crisper and not look so much like a 3. But if you want to ask us a question about your mom's handwriting, why don't you post an image of her handwriting instead of your imitation of it? I'd be willing to bet anything she doesn't actually write like that.

But, anyway, to the OP,

Just like with native speakers of all languages, people will change the stroke order when writing from what's "correct" if they feel than another way may be easier, so it is entirely possible that your mom just finds writing the road primitive first to be easier.

1) That is the right stroke order.

2) I'm not sure if you're talking about stroke order or form here but with regards to form, people have really different handwriting in kanji so many diff ways of writing it are ok.
