I do that too.

You can also tell VLC player to adjust the synchronization... sometimes I have to do this for audio as well. めんどくせえええぇッ

I just did it quickly for myself so it's not perfect. Should be in sync with most releases though.

I recommend "Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water ". It was the first series I watched only in Japanese. One day I was searching for a series to watch on youtube and suddenly remembered the title from a snes game based on it. It was easy to understand and I believe it somewhat fits your criterion, being based on the stories of Jules Verne.
Whatever series you watch, I recommend capturing the audio as you watch it and sticking it on an mp3 player so you can have it play again and again on your commute.
