eye movements during mindless reading

#1
As they go over in the general discussion/conclusions, this has some interesting implications for using eye movement monitoring to increase reading comprehension. Judging by the rudimentary 'face tracking' software via webcam that is currently widespread, that could make for some interesting software for everyday users...

Mindless reading occurs when the eyes continue moving across the page even though the mind is thinking about something unrelated to the text. Despite how commonly it occurs, very little is known about mindless reading. The present experiment examined eye movements during mindless reading. Comparisons of fixation-duration measures collected during intervals of normal reading and intervals of mindless reading indicate that fixations during the latter were longer and less affected by lexical and linguistic variables than fixations during the former. Also, eye movements immediately preceding self-caught mind wandering were especially erratic. These results suggest that the cognitive processes that guide eye movements during normal reading are not engaged during mindless reading. We discuss the implications of these findings for theories of eye movement control in reading, for the distinction between experiential awareness and meta-awareness, and for reading comprehension.

Speed reading studies drew similar conclusions.

I wonder if there are similar studies that show what actually occurs when men's heads continue to nod while listening to their wives talk for three hours.

Not that I've read -- I've only seen pseudoscientific claims about reading faster based on inaccurate information (especially as we're only just now working out the really fine-tuned details about reading in different scripts and processing information). Here I defer to previous rambles on the topic of speed reading and orthography. ^_^

This article is nice and general though in exploring the possibilities and sticks to broader distinctions for now about metawareness and mindless/mindfulness during reading.

@bodhisamaya - Oh bodhi, you're so conventionally unconventional. Men and wives indeed. I believe you mean humans and their partners.
