Despite this great site's service, I mostly am here for the forum because I prefer the versatility of Anki SRS. So I was wondering, how should I set up my flash cards?

On the front side, the keyword, and on the back, the kanji and the story?

Or the story on front with the keyword, and kanji on back?

No story at all? Just keyword front, kanji back? But how would I ever learn the stories then

Also is there any way to view the stories and crap that you brilliant RtK users posted aside from adding each card and viewing it manually? Like a list or something?

Step 1: Download the shared RtK deck from the shared decks
Step 2-infinity: Learn Kanji

But for real, you should download the deck that's already made. You still need to put in your own stories and (maybe) format the deck how you want it. But since you [presumably] already have the deck made for you, it's just a matter of copy/paste

How I have mine set up:
Front: Keyword (or words with the kanji in question in it)
Back: Kanji [story in white font so if I need it, I can scroll over and read it]

How do you learn the stories? You memorize them done day, test it the next day (your grade is whether you could write the kanji or not) and hopefully get to the point where the story isn't needed anymore and just falls away.

I just finished setting up my deck a few days ago.
(on the itouch there would be a scratchpad where there is a gap on the question side)
This setup puts emphasis on readings and Japanese meaning (I would only recommend it if you know enough words already).

Sequa, that's the prettiest RTK deck I've ever seen. Just curious - can anybody top that?

I look at keyword. Can I write it? Yes? hit 'good'. No? Highlight story. Can I write it? Yes? hit 'hard'. No? show and push 'again'.

I downloaded the shared deck that has 3007 kanji in it, and I set it up so that there are no daily new cards. I add in my personal stories for each card, and visualize it in my mind a couple of times, and write the kanji on graph paper (while still thinking about the story). I usually have this site open in a different tab, so that I can see how to correctly fit the kanji in the square (I'm using the kanji practice notebooks that children use).

I write it a few times until I decide it looks nice, and I have felt the story out. Then I move on to the next card. I'm using a mix of the most popular stories from this site, plus my own.

I have the front of the card be the keyword only, and the back show the kanji and story in plain, visible text. So when I review, and the keyword appears, I kind of trace the kanji out in mid-air to see how well I know it. When I reveal the card, I select good if I could create the kanji correctly. If I struggled with the story, and didn't feel like it was really "popping out", yet I was able to write the kanji, I select "hard". If I couldn't remember the story in more than ten seconds, I just reveal the card, and fail it. At that point, I read the story and visualize it in my mind again. Then I move on. The next time it pops up, it's usually pretty easy, and I can pass it after a day or two.

If I decide I don't like a story, or it's consistently hard to remember, then I mark it, and change the story in the Anki browser when I've finished my reviews. I try to make all my stories "triggered" by the keyword, based upon the first or second thing that naturally pops into my mind when I think of the English word.

Nevermind this post. I changed so that now my story is on the 'answer' side because it makes me retain the stories better.

I'm nearing the 500 mark in RTK and finding that I'm hitting Hard more and more often as I have more to remember..

Interestingly, in the intro to Chapter 5, Heisig says it's ok to put the story on the front side of the flashcards. Even in the intro to Chapter 11, where Heisig explains common problems that students encounter with this method and how to overcome them, he doesn't mention "If you can only write the kanji after re-reading your story" as a problem...

So, I'm wondering if we're not being too strict on ourselves by grading Hard for needing the stories.

How do others grade their performance for rtk srs? (e.g. hard, good, easy)
