Hey everyone! My friend from Japan finished college and he gave me his PS3. :O
He said he would be working and wouldn't have time for it and he also didn't have room to take it back with him to Japan.
Anyhow I am a fan of Street Fighter. Especially Street Fighter 3rd Strike. I have the American one (Anniversary Edition) and I tried to load it on my PS3 but it said it was region locked. I really want to play it on the PS3 because I have a new fight stick that only works on PS3 but my question is if I bought an imported edition of Street Fighter 3rd Strike from Japan would it work on my PS3? Does anyone know? Thanks for your help!

Interesting question!
I say give an emulator a go, and see what happens before buying anything. Sony dropped the ball in the backwards compatibility area, but hopefully you find something that works.

Just speculation, but
Japanese System = Plays Japanese Games
I'm assuming the region blocking would continue from generation to generation. I don't have anything you're talking about, but it just seems like a Japanese game would work.

That's what I was thinking as well however I read online that sometimes the PS3 doesn't play PS2 games even if it is still the same region.

The newer ps3 don't have ps2 compatibility, but the older models do(some of them). So if you want to play japanese ps2 games, then you need a japanese ps2 or a modded ps2(recommend buying a cheap ps2 online,i don't like modded systems are they can die very fast...)
But ps3 being blu-ray is region free, so any game you buy that is blu-ray(which is any ps3 game, since it's always blu-ray) it should work

Right, PS3 games are fine because Japan and the US are in the same region, but if you get an older PS3 with PS2 backwards compatibility, it will only play games from the US *or* Japan depending on which one you buy.

It's the Japanese 60GB version. Is that backwards compatible?

Okay this sounds pretty good to me. I think once I get the money I will buy Street Fighter 3rd Strike from Japan off ebay and hopefully that'll work! I know that they are making it online but who knows when that will come out.

If you can find PS3 60 gb model CECHA, this plays both PS2 and PS3 games. I think Sony made the first couple of generations of the PS3 backwards compatible, then stopped.
For PS2, it plays Japanese games only, and for PS3 it plays both US and Japanese region games. It may actually play games from all regions for PS3, but US and JPN are the only ones I have tried.
This has been out of manufacturing for a few years, I bought mine on ebay in nearly new condition from someone in rural Kentucky (go figure!). I wanted PS2 and PS3 capability in one machine for JPN games, not so concerned about being able to play US games. Also it acts as a Region 2 DVD player which is cool because I didn't have one before.

PS3 is not region locked at all for games. Odds are you just don't have backwards compatibility in your console. Sony killed it so people like you would buy the same titles you bought for your PS2 but as a digital download. Since they are cheap people don't complain much and because its a download its cost is almost nonexistent so its pure revenue, genius move on their part.
