hi all. I don't know if this has been asked before, but if I have say ~800 expired cards in the 4th pile, is it better to simply just fail them all and start them over from pile 1 or should I review through all of it.

The ideas in that thread worked ok for me. After recovering from that hiatus, I got myself into the same situation (college finals, senior thesis, etc.). This time I took a different approach, and I think it will work well for you if you have the time. Without doing any reviews on the website, I recalled every story using the book and the study area here. I recalled a few hundred stories a day. After a few days, I had recalled all stories I have made (1000 at the time). Then I used the review page and went through them, a few hundred a day. When I was done, all of my stories were stronger and I pinpointed my really weak stories (the ones I still failed). Good luck!

I'm curious as to why you would want to fail all those cards and start over ?
Give your memory a chance. Surely you will remember some of them. Take advantage of that and push those kanji that worked well even further away, and only fail those that you forgot. Good stories will keep the kanji fresh well past the expiration date
If you know you let the kanji unattended for too long, and/or you are not confident about your recall ability or the strength of the stories you used, then radical_tyro's suggestion is excellent.
But my point is... why not try? Even if you remember 100 of those 800 cards, that's 100 kanji which won't show their nose for a few months.

This is what I said a few days ago to someone who has 900 expired cards and was thinking of failing them all:
Quote:I say just stick it out. Rather than starting from the beginning, just chip away at that pile. If 900 looks daunting, just shoot for 20-30 a day. Maybe half of them will go back to the red pile, but some will advance and if you keep a steady pace, you'll get through them soon enough. I'm right with you. I took a 2-week break and I now have 830 expired cards, but I'm pushing myself to get through 20 "passed" cards every day, and every morning I have fewer expired cards than I did the previous morning. You can do it too!Even if you fail 75% of the cards, it'll be less than having Mr. Fabrice fail all of them for you

I just couldnt do that to myself, automatically culling a whole batch of cards i worked hard at to get to the last box. Cards that are in the last box are cards that were at one time solidly implanted in your brain. I think you will be shocked at how many of them you can still remember given the cue of a keyword. As 900 is a lot to review i can understand how you can at first think simply failing them all will be the best idea. Your probably wondering how long will it take me to review all those 900. By the time i hit the last 100 it will surely be weeks away and by then ill have definately forgotten them all so lets fail em now. But, if you fail them now you still have 900 cards to go through in your first box. Youll end up having to deal with that number anyway. Simply divide and conquer and set manageable goals.
If the review process looks lengthy then you could do as radical tyro said or bend the rules a bit. When reviewing if you got it nearly right, i.e one radical was wrong or wrong placement then maybe you could consider passing it, though with these lot being box 4 it would mean the next review would be 4 weeks away and maybe thats too long to test you again. I guess in that 4 weeks you could have failed the card and then got it back to the 4th box anyway. Your take on that.
You could take a more aggressive approach and simply allow yourself 2 seconds per card. If you dont get it its failed. Youll fly though them and feel confident in knowing only the ones you could recall quickly are in box 4.
Yesterday I had 500 to deal with. It took me 3 hours with half and hour breaks in between. I remembered about 400 of them though id only left them for about a week (a lot of box 1s and 2s thought). Im already on 150 cards a day to review. Culling 500 was not an option.
anyway ganbatte
