100 Kanji A Day Project -- the report.

#26
I have concluded that 100 kanji a day is too much. So I have scaled down to 40-70 (from 80-100) per day, based on lessons.

PROGRESS:
10/26/08: 249
11/23/08: 514
12/20/08: 766
12/25/08: 1394
01/04/09: 1926
02/01/09: 3007 (GOAL)

PILES:
195, 459, 636, 255, 371

Here is the problem, I have 350 expired cards, and 200 failed cards for today (1 day). I may have cut down this week, but last weeks cards have expired and I'm dieing slowly inside.

Anyway, I am happy to say that my headaches have subsided (partly). Yes, apparently studying makes me head hurt. Awey. But, that's not the bad news. The bad news is my horrendous retention rates, I'm talking 10-50% on expired reviews. (1200 kanji in 2 weeks = bad retention, I kid you not people Smile)

In an attempt to boost retention, I have begun writing kanji again. However, I only do this when reviewing, never when studying, that is story time.

Finally, I have to mention something about the last lessons of RtK. What up with these things, way too hard, grumble, grumble, grumble... OK, I feel better... But seriously, if RtK3 is as hard as lesson 51, I feel very sad inside.

Discourage me to do better

Wuss.

I did it in under two months, you better finish in under two months. I studied five to eight hours a day, get off this forum right now and go study.

I did it in 50 days. And I have a tendency to get migraines worse than what you have to deal with. A lot of the time I had to work through them. Wimp.

You did 0 - 3007 in under 2 months, you absolute nutter! I reckon I will get to 2042 in about 7 weeks of study (with a few days off for drinking and loving in between) and I don't mind saying that is probably my limit.

IMO:
30 kanji fly by, the next 20, so
50 get a little tougher, but mainly from boredom, the next 20, so
70 start to really wear you down, and only twice have I gone beyond this and these were in the early days when I was still excited my Mr. Heisig's marvellous method.

What I would say is that the more you push yourself, the easier it is to go that little bit further each time; to begin with 30 per day with my own stories was hard, now I can do it in about 45 minutes with perfect retention after a few hours, so I suppose 100 per day is possible, i just don't really want to prove it to myself.

Hi band,

RTK works better when done fast. If you take a year, its better to learn them in another order.

You should do what you believe it is right. But you gotta have faith in yourself.
We all learn it while we are doing RTK.

You probably can do much more than what you think you can.

_Don't let your lack of belief in yourself slow you down_

Just woke up to see your discouragements, and I became motivated to finish RtK1 today. I won't post any updates in this thread for about a week, so by next time I should be well into RtK3.

I better not get any encouragements along the way either. I get lazy and complacent with congratulatory comments. Talk as much smack as you'd like though.

Trust me, I'd me more than happy to help you as much as you need.

No, I didn't notice he was doing RTK 1 and 3. I only did the 2042.

Ok, thank God for that, I thought you were some kind of super-human kanji learning machine!

I completely agree that RtK is most efficient when it is done fast; you improve with momentum, that's for sure. But believe me I do have faith in myself, I'm just a realist!

Anyway がんばって on the 100 per day!

Inspired by this thread (which I had bookmarked a while ago) and due to my own 'deadlines' I have set in line with the current workload I have from university, I am also embarking on a 100 a day routine. I think I also have a passion or liking for anything done in the extreme.

I have 2 weeks free and have started on the 625 frame.

100 seems a lot more than it sounds when you actually work through them ha, but I am determined to get this done and stick to it.

My first review session is scheduled for tomorrow, the first box. I have my fingers crossed that my methods have been thorough enough to ensure their recall.

P.S The stories on this site were so useful for the hand primitives section, they were incredibly awkward to make stories for I found. So thanks to those who contributed : ).

I finished the last 1000 in a burst last Christmas holidays, pulling about 100 a day. I don't think it really affected my recall - just be prepared for massive amounts of reviews that won't subside for a couple of months.
