Recommend some [Japanese science] fiction authors

#1
After a nine month hiatus I've found some time again and want to pick up some japanese lit.

Does anyone have some authors to recommend? The last book I read was Norweigan Wood and it wasn't my cup of tea. Anything around that level should be fine though, thanks everyone.

There are already a ton of threads about this.

Really?

I did a search and sure there's some talk about what books to do after RtK, etc, but I didn't see anything regarding recommendations for authors.

Please feel free to post a link or two since there are "tons". Smile

EDIT: After searching some more I did come across some, notably http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=5048 thanks.

A thread specifically about Japanese science fiction writers seems like a good idea. So, if you've got some recommendations, please, do share. TEHEHEE

Oh wait, that just says fiction.

Threadjacking for fun and profit? :-)

Anyway, the recent thread on fantasy and SF included some Japanese recommendations amongst the English.

I read 野尻抱介's 太陽の簒奪者 recently (hard SF, heavy on the concepts and speculation and pretty light on characterisation) and liked it. That won the Seiun Award for best Japanese SF novel back in 2003. I've been thinking about trying some of the other previous winners at some point...

星新一 is a great one to start with; he's written a lot of short-short stories and his prose is easy to read.
