I will be working as an ALT and be out of the apartment from 7am to 6pm on weekdays.
So you plan on being in Japan for the next 13 to 17 years? It might be hard to get the dog back home if you ever decide to leave Japan before the animal passes its used by date. Or would you just "dispose" of it if you ever decided to move home and didn't want the trouble/expense of months and months of it in isolated quarantine? Have you researched how much it will cost you to get an animal through quarintine? I suggest you do that.

Think long and hard before you do this. A dog is a sentient being, not just a pet or companion. And Japan is not the most animal friendly country. I know from experiences with animal welfare over there.

Actually if the OP is American, the requirements for bringing a cat or dog into the US are pretty low. Especially if its coming from a rabies free country like Japan. In that case I don't think you even need a certificate and there's no quarantine unless you're coming into Hawaii.

Taking a pet INTO Japan however, is considerably more difficult, expensive, and time intensive.

Oh right. Still worth looking into for the OP. I was just going by the standards of my own country where pets have to be in quarantine for 6 months+, and in some cases not allowed in at all.

You don't eat strangers.
