Can someone help me figure out how to use this program? I've read the readme file, and it refers to .ts files. I don't know what those are. Most of my Japanese videos are in .avi or similar format.

What are you trying to do? .TS is the format that television shows are broadcast in, so this program basically lets you grab the closed caption stream from a tv broadcast and convert it into subtitles.

That has to be one of the worst names for a program I've seen.

Are you sure you want to be using Caption2ass? It's only for extracting subtitles from closed caption streams. What are you trying to do?

edit: I just realised my post exactly paraphrases Zarxrax's

Um, I'm trying to extract subtitles from a video file since that's what somebody told me it could do. They didn't tell me it had to be streaming via a satellite hooked up to a special video card. Because that would be worthless.

You need a .ts video file for that; .avi video files won't do. Also, not all .ts video files are suitable; if someone removed the captions from the file, or if the show did not have captions in the first place, there's nothing the program can do. [o rly?]

You don't see many .ts files floating around on the Internet because they are usually very large (2GB for 30min, 1440x1080) and hard to deal with. People usually convert them to something more friendly (discarding the captions in the process).

For some reason it reminds me of Requiem for a Dream.

If you have hardcoded subs on an avi file, there's really not any way to extract it. Optical character recognition can be used, but I don't believe it is possible with Japanese text.

The movie? Vaguely, I guess.

There are other tools for what you're trying to do. You can use YAMB or GraphEdit to extract subtitles from an avi.

I really wish somebody would illuminate smartazjb0y on the Requiem for a Dream joke. 'Course, it would violate the TOS if it were posted here.

Up for this topic !

I'm writing this message because I have a problem with the extraction of a japanese subtitle from a ts that I downloaded on nyaa. I'm trying Caption2Ass_mod1 version 0.2.9.0 but I can't make it work!! I found this version of Caption2Ass on this website :

http://kitsunekko.net/subtitles/japanese....2.9.0.rar

Can you tell me if it works with your computer ? With my computer, the extraction doesn't start at all, this is so weird and I'm completely lost. Your feedback would really help me Wink.

You could split this into two different programs: Caption2Caption or As.... Oh, nevermind.

I think it sounds like a website that shows pictures of people's asses and you write captions. They are then voted on and the most popular captions are shown.
