Japan - The Strange Country

Thought you may enjoy this random find:

8164.org Wrote:Japan – the Strange Country is the thesis project reel by graphics designer Kenichi Tanaka. It is such a delight to watch. This 11 minute video shows the different aspects of the Japanese life through lighthearted motion infograph. It’s not just eye-candy, but also quite informative.

that was really interesting. But for some reason, a lot of the things talked about are almost the same in other countries. Bottle water!

Best part's the "Don't forget to bow on your way home. And again, and again, and again." as they back away from each other bowing.

It's fun watching Japanese businessmen doing this in the middle of crowded train stations.

Good video, shame it's posted on YouTube without comments being disabled. So many idiots love to argue. I like the slick presentation, kind of makes me want to do graphic design now.

I always laugh at the part when he says アメリカのJunk Foodまで when talking about how there are many restaurants in Japan for different cultures' foods.

It is a well made video, but are misleading statistics really necessary to prove how bizarre Japan can be? Hardly a week passes where I am not surprised by some uniquely Japanese quirk. This ad just started popping up this week on every vending machine in the Kansai area: Winston cigarettes will turn you gay

For some reason, that video is much more interesting in Japanese.

I didn't like that vid at all. Was it really necessary to bring up how many children dies every now and then and crap like that? That children dies in other parts of the world, does not make Japan strange in any way. Same would go for any industrialized country. Throwawayfoodftw.

We see people die everyday on the news, on movies, on south park, so why are people upset with a few statistics?

Just because other countries waste food and contribute little to end world hunger does not mean that Japan is exempt from doing something to minimize it (if they can improve recycling, make intelligent toilets that consume less water, and urge people to use air conditioner less, surely this country can do something to improve this?).

And it surely does not mean that this Japanese guy has no right to criticize his fellow men, or at the very least bring this to their attention.

This Japanese guy made this video for the average Japanese person, who is largely oblivious to these statistics. He did not make this for you geeky gaijin to see. Putting the video in English language was an afterthought. Can you tell me if the average joe in your country is really aware of how much his country is wasting in food and water? Thought not. So go make your own video for your country. It's not this guy's responsibility to address the faults of every nation in the entire world. Also, this was a small media project, not a 300-page thesis on everything that is wrong with Japan. He simply chose 8 topics that he felt he could present in video form in an effective way and went for it.

Jeez, what is the big deal anyway? I would be much more worried about the right-wing japanese desperately attempting to block the viewings of that dolphins movie...

It's been awhile since I watched the video, but I doubt that. When I watched it I got the clear impression that it was made with an international audience (which includes Japan) in mind. Japanese people aren't largely oblivious to the statistics, they just have a 'shikata ga nai' attitude about it.

The guy wrote "This is my final thesis project. I created info-graphic, motion piece. My objective is to make Japanese people to think about that everything happening here in Japan, isn't that normal. So I created this video from foreigner's point of view, rather than Japanese people's point of view."

From the original video link.

I guess it being interesting for foreigners is a good side effect and it is really well made I think.

I doubt most Japanese people know just how much food they throw away and how many waribashi get tossed. Waribashi especially. No one 200/year/person adds up fast- but very few Japanese people I've met have really thought about it.

Most of the other things I'm guessing most people know about- suicide, technology, love hotels (though my girlfriend was pretty surprised to hear how infrequently Japanese people have sex compared to the rest of the world), etc.

Why don't Japanese people have sex that much? I hear it's a pretty fun activity.

I think it's logical. With the rising prises, it's getting harder to bring up a child, but with the popualtion declining in japan, if you have a child you have to take responsibility, and the laws convict people abandoning their non-wanted children for example. On the other side, the japanese society in some areas is still quite 'thinking-the-old-way', not advancing as fast enough as the rest of the world. For instance: smoking, donating internal organs, and of course pregnancy-prevention. With that we finally arrive to our answer: the japanese don't like to use the modern-world's solutions for not getting pregnant (even condoms), but once you have a child you have to take care of it (and it's costy), so the best way to avoid all this hassle is not to have sex Smile
That's just my theory anyways, and I can't back it up with anything....

Think about it man!! If its fun and they don't do it, it means they have something even MORE FUN THAN SEX and they just don't want to tell us.... We all want to go there so badly just to discover what that is Big Grin

Why do Greek people have it so much? I'm going out to buy some feta cheese and pita bread now!

The great thing about living in Japan is helping others to release the pent-up frustration that has been building up their whole lives. KABOOM!

If it was really that fun, you'd tell us about it instead of telling us you heard about it. =)

You probably have 10 or 12 girlfriends by now, I'd imagine, using all that tantric sex you studied in Hawaii. Stud.

I wish. I am working 60 hours a week and have a two month old daughter. I am living with the mother of my daughter and have limited myself to only having one other girlfriend until things settle down at work in six months or so.
Truthfully, I have never seen such appreciation from women for doing nothing more than being an unselfish lover as I have here in Japan. In Hawaii, most people in my circles were skilled in Tantric sex so it was almost expected from girlfriends.
