Studio Ghibli/Shanghai reference + Forbidden Island

#1
Hey guys,

http://gakuranman.com/gunkanjima-ruins-o...en-island/

Friend of mine just showed me this and it sort of reminded me of this building complex in shanghai (or HK? I forgot). It inspired miyazaki to base a building in one of his movies on this real place.

Basically it's a cram packed building, that's almost like a city, and houses something like 80 000 people. I remember there being a wikipedia article on it, I cannot, for the life of me find it. Anyone know what i'm talking about? Also I remember the place had like a number after its name, perhaps "complex 75" or something :S

Cool link though btw^^ I would love to go there, I love abandoned hospitals.

Are you talking about New Tama, from Pom Poko or Whisper of the Heart? Not a single building, but there are huge buildings in there...

Or maybe the coffin building from On Your Mark?

Edit: too late, and wrong!

Wait, what in a Ghibli film was inspired by this?

WOW! I love this kind of stuff. Is the it the big building in "Spirited Away" you are referring to, or "Castle in the Sky" maybe? Thanks for sharing this, it gives me many ideas for some art id like to do - right up my alley!

There was a good video game called Shenmue part 2 that had locations at that place. Four large skyscrapers each being a small city. The game was by the famous video game designer Yu Suzuki (Outrun, Sonic, Space Harrier, Virtua Fighter).

Actually, if you have a dreamcast, the part 1 of the Japanese version of the game is great for virtual immersion into a Japanese town. It's set in Yokosoka and Dobuita street.

Spirited Away building is modeled after Dogo Onsen in Ehime. In fact that whole movie is pretty much modeled after places in Ehime.
