I was just wondering if anyone else out there is registered on LingQ to mine sentences. LingQ is a language-learning website that promotes learning a language through reading and listening, not through textbooks. It was founded by Steve Kaufman, the polyglot author of The Linguist on Language blog. He seems to have a sort of AJATT philosophy to him, and has a youtube channel as well. I think he speaks somewhere around 10 languages.

I'm registered there, but I don't think I'm quite ready to use it, because I just can't seem to get into it. That, or it's just not for me.
Also, sentence mining isn't for me, either.

What I do like is being able to read and select certain words that I don't understand and get an entry for them right away without having to head over to Jisho.com.wccrawford Wrote:I'm registered there, but I don't think I'm quite ready to use it, because I just can't seem to get into it. I suppose the other thing that I don't care for is the audio. It wouldn't be bad if it was spoken up to speed, but it's rather slow. The only reason this bothers me is because my listening comprehension reeks of something foul, and slowed down, hand-holding audio isn't going to help me at all.

The first thing that came to mind reading "lingQ" was a character named Ling-ling from drawn together. He was japanese...

I found that LingQ has a lot of potential, but there are some issues with it for learning chinese or japanese. For instance, the morphological analyzer sometimes fails to detect the proper kanji combinations words and wrongly separates the kanjis (since there's no spacing in written Japanese). I'm not sure if their developpers can use MeCab instead, but it would probably solve a lot of problems. So inserting your mined sentences can sometimes be haphazard. Also, there are two versions of the same lessons: one in kana, and kanji. Personally, I would have made one version with ruby markup (furigana) that can be turned on or off using javascript.
That being said, after I finish RTK, I may give the paid version of LingQ a shot.

Anyone care to elaborate on the differences between LingQ and Lang8. From what Ive gathered (briefly) they look like the same thing.
Also, is there a already a thread with links to peoples profiles who are using these services. Id love to have a look!
Thx

By podcasts do you mean the audio each user provides for his/her journal entry?

No, podcasts really. I like them because they also have scripts which I will study soon, because each podcast talks about a different subject (like, politics, japanese men, christmas, living with others, etc etc).
