To me it's a glaring error with the AJATT system - you're meant to replace your media (movies, music, tv shows) with Japanese equivalents, but problem is there *aren't* equivalents for alot of Western output.

You give up your western media for what Japan has to offer for a couple of years. Besides music, which as you said doesn't really help you learn much anyway, what other media is there that doesn't have a Japanese equivalent? You can get translated books, dubbed movies and TV shows, Japan has scores of newspapers and magazines, heck, this dude on YouTube even sings lots of my favourite English songs in Japanese:
I don't think listening to Japanese music affects my language ability at all anyway, as I tend to ignore lyrics or listening to instrumental bands. So meh..
What's lacking?
Edit: That guy has two channels BTW:

You can find some more translated songs by searching「訳詩」, or the song name etc.

Like as far as TV goes there's some awesome talk/reality tv show/tv talent and it's very different from american TV.... I love it. it's not me forcing myself to like something I don't like... it's just something I like that happens to be japanese. For me I can't replace my japanese music/tv shows with american equivalents becaues there aren't any. and it's fine I don't need to watch equivalents for everything I watch in japanese in english or whatever.fakewookie Wrote:Seriously, I can't understand why someone would do that. One of the coolest band I know is Yo La Tengo. Would be fun if there was a Japanese equivalent.
Here's one for the mornings Little Eyes by Yo La Tengo
My Little Corner of The World by Yo La Tengo
They have some free downloads on their site.

Whoa. Fabrice, the first one is the most perfect song for the current weather!
Now I see why you posted this band even though it's not Japanese.

I've been a fan of Japanese music of just about every genre for 6 years and would gladly suggest some music if someone would like to specific the genre that they wish to hear i.e. Rock, V-Kei, Reggae, Hip Hop, R&B, Pop.

Reggae please!
I only know that "Organic Reggae" album.

RYO the SKYWALKER is the king of Japanese Reggae, Cornhead (xD) NG Head, MANJILINE, FIREBALL, CHOZEN LEE, Leeca, NINE MILES is amazing. Rueed and well TERRY THE AKI-06 was the biggest Japanese Reggae artist around until he died in 2007. Also try Megaryu, Moomin, Pushim (She's really popular.) If you want more I'm sure I can come up with them.

I too have this problem with Japanese music. There is a lot of good music but few songs that I can listen to over and over. I would love to listen to some great Japanese rap songs but I haven't encountered any. In my experience Japanese music is best when it's electronic and catchy pop.
I quite like, for example, Maximum The Hormone and 'Kids' covered by バニラビーンズ (
). It's not sung in Japanese but in English with a Japanese accent
Have you heard of the TOYOTA SOCIAL APP AWARD? http://www.youtube.com/user/SOCIALAPPAWARD
lol, so cute

Well, this *MAY* indeed sound odd (笑い), but I really like this type of stuff (like 緋牡丹博徒):
Sounds old and came across it by watching a j-dorama called "Nihongo no shiranai nihonjin", haha. I really love this stuff and it's at least fun listening to. What's the genre? XD

This is a good place to sample and buy tunes. Theres tons of different generes and you can hear samples of most of it. Makes a good springboard for exploring.

I'm seriously confused in this thread here. I see a lot of recommendations. But I don't see anyone mention Southern All Stars or Chage Aska......????
I mean, these guys are like legends in Japan. The biggest things in Japan, and yet, you people never heard of them??
You heard of the Ray Charles song Ellie My Love?
Well, that's actually a Japanese song called Itoshii no Ellie by Southern All Stars.
There you go, here's your Western equivalent.

i LOVE shiori no te-ma by southern all-stars except i love it when it's sang by these two:

I also have no interest in Jpop... it's really all the same boring stuff for me. The only time I really only listen to it is as background music in Drama / move / anime.
Actually some anime music is pretty good. I like music from Yoko Kanno... Cowboy Bebop, The Vision of Escaflowne, Wolf's Rain, RahXephon (...)
I am sure there has to be a number of Japanese artist... it's just most the mainstream is well... no so good and I haven't looked too much into it.
And if you want something kind of fun with Japanese subtitle:
