PS3 JRPGs?

#1
Well since the PS3 is all fancy and region free I was thinking of importing a couple JRPGs(my genre of choice). I don't know how many of you here are gamers or have the same tastes, but I would like some opinions from any of you who are.

I'm currently looking into Atelier Rorona, Ar Tonelico 3, Tales of Vesperia, Resonance of Fate, and Valkyria Chronicles.

I've already beat Tales of Vesperia in English on the 360, but it has extras on the PS3 and it's in Japanese =). It was one of my favorite games ever, but because I already own it I'm a little apprehensive to re-buy it.

The other games all look interesting and fun. I haven't play any of them before. So I figured I would check here and see if anyone here had similar interests that I could get an opinion from.

the JRPGs I already own (In english sadly) Are Disgaea 3, and Final Fantasy 13. Replaying through FF13 in Japanese sounds like fun, but again I'm apprehensive to buy a game I already have. Same with Disgaea 3 (except I haven't even beaten the game yet, but now I don't wanna play it because it's in english >.>)

Any input on the topic is appreciated.

You can get Valkyria Chronicles and FF13 for under 2000 yen used in Japan now. That's cheap enough to buy again.

If you aren't in Japan, I'm not sure how you'd order them though.

sadly I'm not in Japan so ordering them seems to be fairly expensive. I tend to use Yesasia or Playasia. And they aren't cheap. I'm not sure if people here have better ideas on how to order them.

However I don't own Valkyria Chronicles right now so that I would be buying for the first time anyway.

I heard some games are the exact same version in Japan and overseas, and the text's language depends only on your PS3's language option. Maybe you could try changing it to Japanese before spending money?

My PS3 has been in Japanese for a couple months now. Two of my games do change into full Japanese. And one of them changes the text but not the voice acting. But neither Disgaea nor FF13 change sadly.

Valkyria Chronicles (European version) has the option of English or Japanese voice acting, with English subtitles.

I can check if it switches to Japanese subtitles if you like..

Whoops, misread what you had already played. I want Tales of Vesperia too, and it's not cheap here yet. 6000yen new, and 4000ish used.

Hmm that would be kind of interesting to know. I would save around $20 if I didn't have to import the game assuming the European and U.S. version are the same.

Yeah it's about $80 to import >.>

Got FF13 off ebay for 20 bucks. I've yet to see Tales of versperia for any less than 60, though.

Oh very nice. Thanks for informing me. I think I'll have to go re-buy FF13 then =)

The JP PSN has a ton of PS1 games on it for 600-1500 yen. They usually lack both voice acting and furigana, but they are classics, so...

If you happen to live in New York, California, Hawaii, Paris, Vancouver, or Seoul, you can buy used Japanese games at Book Off.

Speaking of PS3 JRPGs, anyone know if there is a script floating around for FFXIII? I just recently bought and wanted to know if anyone has transcribed the dialogue from it yet.

That thread has transcripts for the dialogue.

There was a link to this Nico Douga list, which has 60 videos worth of FFXIII.

Fantastic! Thank you for these valuable resources. My copy hasn't necessarily arrived yet, so I won't be checking out the videos, but I guess I can start skimming through some of the dialogue to see how difficult it is. Thanks again.

Sorry, it's not a JRPG but playing Fallout 3 in Japanese has been pretty awesome for me. Dialogue voice acting is all pretty good and everything has Japanese subtitles you can turn on or off.

I don't really venture into the realm of JRPGs, though, so no advice there. Smile

How is Fallout 3? I heard so many good things about it, but never bothered to pick it up and try it out. I'm almost done with Platinum on FF13, and then I'm gonna go back and finish playing 零:月蝕の仮面 for Wii.

Kinda getting off-topic from RPG's, but I'd love to get a JP copy of Killzone 2 one day too; I love the English version Tongue Aside from FF14, the only game I'm looking forward to atm is Dead Space 2 next year, and no clue if there will be a JP version of the game.

To the OP, as for JRPG's, the only one I know outside of FF13 that I'd wanna play is Star Ocean 4. The English version of the game has JP subtitles and voice acting if I recall correctly, which should make it easy(and cheaper) to get a hold of. I haven't played Resonance of Fate, but I would like to give it a try as well. Heard good and bad things about it, but it still looks great in my opinion.

EDIT: Even though you've played thru FF13 in English, if you can get a hold of a cheap copy, it's worth it just to hear the million times better voice acting on the JP version, haha Smile

Have you played the Japanese version of Tales of Vesperia and Trusty Bell: Chopin no Yume(called "Eternal Sonata" in the US)? Both games had PS3 versions that were released in Japan one year after the Xbox 360 version.

Also, Resonance of Fate is called "End of Eternity" in Japan.
I think they had to change the name of the US version due to
some existing copyrights/trademarks on the title "End of Eternity".

Fallout 3 - If you've played Morrowind or Oblivion, Fallout 3 is basically the same (but radically different setting). If you haven't played those, Fallout 3 might be a bit overwhelming. It's very much an open game world, where you run out a door in the beginning and then you're on your own. Not nearly as structured plotwise as most JRPGs, but with sssooooo much more freedom.

Not for everyone, and now that I think about it, big fans of JRPGs might not like it too much (in general).

Fallout 3 is the best game for PS3 ever, in my humble opinion.

Ah, I remember downloading the demo for this on the 360 a while back. And I clearly didn't have a clue what I was doing when they just throw you right into the action. Complicated battle system, I think, but it could be a good game.
