Besides, it isn't like you had to get a degree in quantum phisics, reading a couple of dictionary or Wikipedia entries should be enough.

But if you want to learn languages, then you'd better know.

If I don't understand the words he's using to describe the sentence, I'm not gonna understand the sentence either. The use of a couple of basic grammar terms isn't making Japanese study more confusing, but less. It's your not wanting to learn them what's giving you trouble. If you don't like the idea of learning a couple of words in your own language, then probably learning a whole new one isn't for you. If you still want to learn a new language, then the effort of learning a couple of basic notions of grammar will be trivial.

There's also more than just Tae Kim when it comes to basic grammar. Genki, UBJG, JFE, JFBP, etc can give you the basics but you might miss out on a ready made Anki deck is all.I probably never listened when I was studying it in school anyway. I tried Genki and found it incredibly boring. It was all about univerty etc. I might take a look at the others you mentioned but so far I haven't liked what I've seen.

I've decided to just stop questioning myself and get on with it to be honest
Instead of studying actual japanese I've been spending half of my time asking questions and googling stuff. I'm gonna go with the AJATT idea of just do it, do anything in japanese.
