Immersion and sleep

#1
Been slowly setting up a bit of an immersion environment. I know a lot of people don't take much stock in the idea of sleep learning, but I think there is a lot of potential as our subconscious mind is SO powerful, and well..why not? So anyway, I don't know how to practically do this. I can't just leave my computer on some non-stop streaming site (if one even exists) because I'm limited to 5GB of usage a month with my internet, it's the best and only option for me where I live. I can't just play a dvd because it will be over soon and very few dvds replay themselves (they just replay the menu). Not to mention I think I might have trouble falling asleep with it, what I really want is something I can trigger to go off (gradually rising in volume if I had the choice to be really picky) about an hour or two after I fall asleep, and continue nonstop until I wake up and stop it. I have an Ipod classic (120GB of storage) so maybe if anyone could recommend some massive, random japanese conversation file that will play for more than 8 hours straight, I could probably figure something out with that. Hope someone has some advice. This is the main thing lacking from really making a full on hardcore immersion environment. And it's important to me.

I'd recommend just focusing on getting a good night's sleep. If you happen to find playing Japanese media distracts you while you're trying to sleep, be sure to reduce it somehow.

You might want something that's just the opposite, volume-wise--a gradual decrease in volume.

Well it's not that it's just Japanese media distracting me from sleep. It's anything really. I need quiet to fall asleep, but once I AM asleep, noise will not wake me so easily. Unless it's sudden, but continuous noise is fine.

Haven't you ever had outside noises influence your dreams? You interact with them. People say that sleeping with Japanese dialogue in the background can lead you to actually communicate IN Japanese in your dreams, even if you are nowhere near fluent! This is the power of the subconscious that I want to tap into. Any little thing that you have learned while awake, even if you don't remember it at all, your subconscious has full reign over it, which is why it's possible to actually dream in a language that you don't yet fully understand.

1) pick a set of audio-books from here:

(I highly recommend the Charles Perrault ones, as they're made for kids and are read in a relaxing "story at bedtime" manner)

2) put them on your iPod

3) put the play setting to "repeat" (you can repeat 1 song or an album)

Enjoy!

Wow I didn't even think about audio books! lol it's all so obvious now Tongue.

And yeah actually I haven't even had my ipod for very long and I was wondering if I could repeat albums. Thanks a bunch!

I highly recommend listening to this

One of the ideas from this show, is that during sleep you will be practicing everything you've learned during the day.

I don't know how good your dream recall is, but I'm estimating about 25% of my dreams are in Japanese or are me at a computer doing kanji.

So as long as you immerse yourself during the day, the dreams will be immersive too.
