"random question" topics never work because people just make new topics when they have a question. There's no point in trying to corral them.

Did you just erase the content of a post just because 1 person told you it wouldn't work?

Because if convincing you of doing things is that easy, I would have to tell you that posting on forums without depositing some money on other people's bank accounts never works because people don't pay attention to other people unless they get something on exchange. May I send you my bank account information?

Of course, having the topic back wouldn't be bad either (I actually found it interesting).

Well, anyway I'll post a couple of Japanese Wikipedia on Japanese (interestingly redundant):

Classification of kanji: 六書

Types of strokes: 筆画

Stroke order: 筆順

Types of components according to their position (you know, へん、かんむり, etc.): 偏旁

Radicals: 部首

And this is a forum thread about wether saying things like 「楽しいでした」 instead of 「楽しかったです」 is right or wrong: 「楽しいでした」という言い方は正しいですか?

You're welcome.

Actually, since it seems that many people are afraid of getting in contact with non-native Japanese, I think having a collection of links to Japanese texts and discussing about their content would be interesting. Your thread goes in that direction and made me feel like reading Japanese, which is always a good thing.

It isn't much, but refusing it would be impolite of me. Smile

If you liked this thread as much as I did, you will definitely like the numerous debates on this: http://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/...Id=9829269

Not just there but a few other places as well. It's an excellent question. Just today I was watching a recent drama and someone (in a business position, mind you, which is something one of the respondents says is a definite no-no) uses it. I even wrote it in a lang-8 entry recently, and it wasn't until the third person to comment that he corrected it. My stance? Pretty much exactly what the fourth post in the above link says (including the question).

I didn't read the whole post about 全然大丈夫 etc, but while it may not be correct, it's definitely used all the time. Kind of like "I ain't got no boots." Although this makes you sound rather uneducated, I don't think 全然〜 has the same kind of dumb sound to it. Although I'm not a native....?

I also liked how in ダーリンは外国人, the movie at least, I don't remember the books, that was one of the things that brought Tony and Saori's dad closer together. They both agreed it was stupid.

If you think about it, it probably carries the same kind of uneducated connotation. It kind of gives one the feeling that the person knows the 全 kanji but not the 然, doesn't it?

However, it just goes to show you how much language changes, but I won't go into it here because I believe there is another thread, albeit older, on the same subject.

to some point it probably does. it isnt something youll hear between people who arent on familiar terms.

although, id consider it an "accepted" part of the modern language. which i think is probably why it was actually a point in the film/manga that only an older man and a "language otaku" (tony) thought it was bad

Our teachers specifically covered 全然大丈夫. It's incorrect in standard Japanese but it's so common and especially among younger people that it's expected to become standard Japanese eventually.

I personally use it from time to time as well, I think it sounds fine, only when talking to younger people though.

bottom line, using 全然大丈夫, at least when talking to younger folks, is 全然大丈夫

I think I'm going to start using this for the sole reason of seeing how many of my friends I can get to call me out on it ($10 says it's less than half... sometimes one has to marvel at how little a Japanese person will say even to a friend just to preserve... whatever it is they try to preserve).

P.S. - In case that last part came out anti-Japanese, it's really not. I'd try to explain it better, but I can't.

Everyone does speechreading to an extent. It's part of the multimodal/amodal nature of the brain and language (e.g. speech/visual/motor processes).

Here's a couple 実況プレイ series from nicovideo, the first is a must see and the second one is also hilarious unless you hate drunk people or something
http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm6979644
http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm2750853

Nicozon itself is simply a page that lets you browse for nicovideo videos and has direct links to them; what's nice about this is 1) no in-your-face ads 2) no need to sign in 3) NO GODDAMN "音量二倍で:馬鹿のみんなさん、知ってるんですか~?今、午後五時で~す!” what's even the point of that. Apparently uploaders on nicovideo can choose to not let anyone see the video from outside but I only know this from the one(1) video that I couldn't watch through nicozon.

Oh and here's a site with a bunch of books that are in the public domain http://www.aozora.gr.jp/, like 吾輩は猫である.

Edit: (re below, not worth a new post) not all the time. I sometimes got the feeling he was faking it because he just seemed SO DUMB but um, after seeing almost all of it I'm pretty sure he's not. He picks up some more steam later on and does more of actual talking, but I thought the voluminous comments made up for the times when there was little monologue. I can totally see why you wouldn't like him though, I'm not sure I would've followed it if it weren't for the fact I could watch it with my non-Japanese speaking friends (I had to explain a few things but mostly the humor remained intact despite the language barrier). Anyway, link that drunken Mario!

Drunken Japanese gameplay videos are usually great. The Famicom Mario one was the best. The Biohazard one isn't that good though since it's just a guy shouting 分からない over and over instead of drunkenly playing the game.
