How to change Japanese fonts in Windows?

#1
At home I use a Mac, but my work computer and my laptop are windows. The difference between the way the Mac displays Japanese text and the way Windows does is astounding. On the Mac, kana looks gorgeous, crisp and substantial looking. Curves are smooth. Very easy to read. On Windows, the text looks thin/wiry and jagged in comparison. I know Windows has the capability of making the text look more "mac like" but only at larger sizes. Is there a way to change the default font systemwide?

That brings me to another question. Where can I download different fonts for Japanese? Just switching from Arial to Courier for example, makes no difference. So there must be specific Japanese fonts available I'm assuming.

Which version of windows are you using?

Windows 7 has some OK fonts. I gave up on finding anything good for XP.

Best font for Windows?

I think Meiryo (came with Vista for ClearType viewing). It looks great in both Japanese and English.
Just Google it for free download.

Cheers,
Tom
