I thought that I would write this because it's good practice, and I'm interested to see what kind of response I get. Let me know what you think.

私は日本語を勉強するために、いろいろな本を読んだり、音楽を聞いたりしています。
でも、勉強のためだけじゃなくて、もちろん楽しいですね。
皆さんのお勧めを聞いてみたいと思っています。

音楽
私は日本に初めて来た時は、J-Popがあまり好きじゃなかったです。
でも日本に住めば住むほど、だんだん慣れてきました。
私の好きな日本人のバンドは
レミオロメン、くるり、スピッツです。
皆さん、日本の音楽のお勧めがありますか？

読書
日本語の本を読めるようになるために、皆さんRTKをがんばっていますね。
私は最近、宮沢賢治の「銀河鉄道の夜」という小説を読んでいます。
日本人が高校でよく読む本で、とても美しい言葉が書いてあります。
ふりがなが全部ついている小説を買いましたので、RTK１がまだ終わっていない人でも
読めると思いますが、言葉がけっこう古くて、ちょっと難しいですね。
日本人は、だいたい全員がこの本を読んだことがあるので、会話で話せるトピックになると思います。
皆さん、小説などのお勧めがありますか？

映画
字幕があって、映画は初級でも楽しめるものですね。
皆さんもうよく分かっていると思いますが、
宮崎駿さんのもの（「千と千尋の神隠し」など）全部好きです。
それと、北野武さんの「座頭市」も好きです。

漫画とアニメ
私は漫画のことがよく分からないので、皆さんに聞いてみたいと思います。
アニメも詳しくないですが、この映画が好きです：
Ghost in the Shell、人狼、宮崎駿さんのもの

以上のこと以外のお勧めがあればぜひ教えてください。
私の日本語が間違えたら、それも教えてください。
よろしくお願いします。

いいアイデアですね、このスレ。音楽や本などがよく勉強になれるでしょう。

お勧めか?まあ、Heisigに関する勉強といえば、やっぱりまず本や他の読解練習を探したほうが一番今まで習ったことを増強すると思います。私見を言わせてくれれば村上春樹（むらかみ・はるき）の本は文法的に難しくないし、常用漢字以外の字が少ないし、初めとしていい本だと思います。自分は今「１９７３年のピンボール」って言う本を読む中ですけど、有名な著者なので他にもたくさんあります。その上、内容もけっこうおもしろいしね。ちょっと変だけど。笑
他には?新聞もあるよね。

勉強に関してはどんな音楽がいいかちょっと性別によって違うと思います。自分が作者の話し方を真似していいように選んだほうがいいからそう思います。そして、男は男子シンガーのバンドを選んで、女の子は女子シンガーのバンドを選んだほうがいいって言うことになります。男子シンガーのバンドなら、もう挙げたの以外ではアジアン･カンフー･ジェネレーション、B'z、モンゴル８００などがあって、女子シンガーのほうにはHitomi、Tommy Heavenly6 （the brilliant greenのシンガーなんだ）、宇多田ヒカルなどがお勧めです。菓子を見たら音楽も読解練習になれます。

映画:たんぽぽ、Shall We Dance?、Battle Royale、などなど。

漫画･アニメの他に、ドラマとかバラエティー番組もけっこういい聴解練習になると思います。さらに、その二つはもっと言語的に自然かもしれないと思います。

それ以外、ミクシィーって知ってますか？日本語でのMySpaceみたいな感じで、このスレと同じように書いたり読んだりできます。言語は自分から書いたほうがただの読解よりよっぽどいいと思いますので、大勧めです。メンバーから招待をもらわないと参加できないんですけど。

映画 : I haven't seen many japanese movies yet, but 下妻物語 never fails to put me in a good mood. I think the first sentence in that movie I managed to understand from beginning to end was when 桃子hands a cabbage to Ichiko and says "今日から、　これが貴方の友達です。　じゃ！"

Last year there was some kind of movie retrospective in Brussels and I discovered the wonderful movies from Yasujiro Ozu ( 小津 ). I have made it as one of my long term goals to understand everything that they say in his movies from beginning to end.

I also discovered Akira Kurosawa last year, first I saw Rashoumon ( 羅生門 ) and then The Seven Samurai, and Yojimbo. Toshiro Mifune is amazing.

Yep, スレ＝thread.

Even if your grammar isn't that far along, I'd suggest trying to write as much as you can. Writing can be even better practice than reading!

When I started this thread, it was never my intention to exclude people who aren't confident with their writing. If you'd like to say something then please feel free to do so in any language. However, as darg_sama said, it's really good practice to give it a go and just try and write something. Even if it's absolutely appalling Japanese. If there's something you really want to say and you don't know how then you can always say it in English at the end. There may be someone in the forum who knows how to say it and then we can all learn something. If you're open to suggestions, comments and corrections with your Japanese then you can also say so like I did in my first post. I'm also open to questions if people don't understand what I've written (maybe because my Japanese is bad). The only request I would make is that English and Japanese sections of posts are clearly separated. Having an English sentence with Japanese in the middle or vice versa is a head ache for me to read and I think it's bad for your Japanese.

If everyone is like me, then writing in Japanese feels like a chore　and it takes time. For this reason, I have a bad habit of rudely putting off replying to Japanese friends' emails and so forth. However, I think that writing practice is the area that is most neglected in Japanese study and if you do it then the benefits are very great. The more you practise the better you'll get.

As I mentioned in one of my other posts, I think it's very important to try to balance your progress with all four areas - reading, writing, listening, speaking. Working on one helps with your progress in the others.

To sum up what I said in my first post, I'm just looking to use this thread to share recommendations people have about novels, films, music, manga etc. Any Japanese media that you thought was fantastic, please give it a shout.

このスレでは、勉強を優先しなくてもいいと思います。ただ日本語を楽しむことは一番大切なことだと思います。

Dargかダグでいいよ?このHPに申し込んだときにそのつもりだったけど、Dargって短すぎるって言われちゃって。実はね、自分の名前に「様」を付けるなんてちょっと偉そうな感じだな｡　だから止めよう｡笑

もう言った映画以外で何がいいかなぁ?たけしビートがけっこう好きだけど、彼がちょっと分かりにくいと思うので、勉強にならないだろう、それは｡電車男は？他のセクションでは「茶の味」も勧められた。

やっぱりアニメのほうが手に入りやすいよね｡ジブリのが面白いけど、他にはちょっと現在のは知らない。
今ドラマとバライエティ番組のほうが好きだ｡最近のといえば、電車男、Attention Please, Matthew's Best Hit TV、メチャメチャいけてる！とか。
興味があれば、ここかここをぜひご覧してみな。その二つで何でも探せると思う｡二つ目のほうはドラマなどのほかに音楽に一番いいHPだよ。Bittorrentが必要だけど｡

In fact I was hoping for that, I would like to practice writing here, and see more ppl trying without worrying too much about grammar and such if they are in RTK 1.

So... I am thinking of moving this thread to the kanji room, and changing the focus of the "kanji room" forum into something broader, perhaps a forum reserved for Japanese only ? A place for everyone to practice the learned kanji and try to write Japanese ? What doth you thinketh ? If it goes, then we can have a "sticky" and put up some rules, like only english for corrections to other's text, or comments.

Oh, and I will definitely honor it by making a fool of myself and writing something there

This forum "Learning Japanese" would be for grammar etc.

I think it would be nice that we can officially have a "english no-go" forum, let me know what you think! Thanks!

Sounds like a good idea to me. I'm all for it.

I hope that people don't think that they will make a fool of themselves by writing in Japanese. People who have reached intermediate Japanese and above all had to start somewhere. We've all either been in the beginners camp or we're there now.

Immacolata once wrote a post that talked about being intimidated by people that have been learning Japanese for a long time. I remember I once felt something similar when I mentioned to some intermediate learners that I was thinking of starting to take Japanese classes. After I started learning though, I've never had that experience again. I wonder if other people have.

I think that we've got a good supportive environment in the forums rather than a competitive one and I hope that everyone can feel free to post nonsense Japanese.

Sounds good to me too. I'm all for people here improving their Japanese, and the only way to do that is practice! Like wrightak said, don't be intimidated by people that are better than you - try to take from them what you can and learn from them. I'm always down to help people out when I can or give pointers if they want me to. I'm still learning myself and definitely remember what it was like starting out.

３０分の後で。。。今日本語で書けます。Linuxだからちょっと難しい。

最近私の一番面白い日本映画はSurvive Style 5+.昔はディレクタさん
がCMのディレクタと思いますからすごく早くてCMっぽいです。色々な話がありまして、
Pulp Fictionな感じです。話は全て違う、愛、死、家族、などがあります。

Happiness of the Katakurisも好きです。普段たかしみいけ（漢字？）は恐い映画を作ってま
すけどこれは音楽映画です！話は山の中で家族は新しいホテルがありますけど客さんはいない。
二三客さんが来るけど部屋の中で死んでいます！皆さん映画と一緒に日本語で歌いなさいよ！

アニメはちょっと好きじゃない．映画で一つ好きのアニメはメトロポリス．話はFritz Langの
古い映画から、でもアニメで作ります。テレビ番組と言えば最近はクレヨンしんちゃんを見ている。
子供の番組と思いましてでもしんちゃんは大人みたいな男の子！いつもおしりを
見せている、女性にナンパをしているなど！日本語は面白くて、しんちゃんはいつもだじゃれをしています。

本は川端康成の「雪国」を読んでいます。理由は一つだけ。実は大学に働いているそして大学
図書館に「雪国」がありまして、日本語と英語の冊。日本語と英語に比べながら本を読んでいます。

日本語で面白いホームページが知っていますか？私は毎日「Daily Portal Z」を読んでいます。
作者はばかと思いますけどいつもおかしいです。今日は「おっぱいミサイル」を作ります．（笑）

でも私の一番大好きな物は日本雑誌です。「Brutus」や「Casa Brutus」や色々なカメラ雑誌
が大好きです．イギリス雑誌よりくわしく情報があります。

これは一番長い日本語で書いたことができました！

I always put off writing, and exercises in textbooks because they're much
harder than just reading. But this turned out to be really useful
as I had to check back which form the verbs should be in, which
side is the main bit of ~ながら and so on. Oh, and it forced me to
setup japanese text input Looks like i'm going to have to make time
to do some writing every day. It would definitely be good to have
a section for this, with a few topics going on...

It's a lot of effort, but the benefit is quite clear after you've done it isn't it? If you can produce language accurately then you can definitely understand the same language when you read it. So it's an excellent way of cementing knowledge that you pick up through reading and listening. It's a really good test of your grammar understanding as well.

I've noticed that everyone else has been writing posts in casual form so I followed suit. Maybe if people could sign their Japanese posts with what they'd like to be called in Japanese? nmkohi, are you happy with nmkohiさん or would you prefer コーヒさん or something else? I'm アンドリュー.

三池崇史 （たかしみいけ）の映画のなかでこれは良い例です。僕は「中国の鳥人」（Bird People of China）とＡＵＤＩＴＩＯＮをけっこうすきです。殺し屋1（Ichi the Killer）は面白いし浅野忠信（Ｔａｄａｎｏｂｕ Ａｓａｎｏ）はいつも素晴らしいけど僕には一寸見にくいです。漫画が好きな人に勧めます。

勉強ためな映画なれば僕は岩井俊二（Ｉｗａｉ Shunji）のＬｏｖｅＳｔｏｒｙを進めます。キャストも話も良いです。

２００６で見て一番好きな日本の映画は何ですか？僕はＤＶＤでＴｏｎｙＴａｋｉｔａｎｉを先週見て、すごく印象しました。映画の後、村上の小説をさがして読みました。両方もお進めます。

Here's a short writing practice about a place in Brussels:

次の月曜日に"Mus?e du Cin?ma"(映画博物館)へ「白痴」を見に行くつもりです。
黒澤明映画はとても好きです。その博物館ではたくさん映画の古典があります。
チャップリン、バスター・キートンなどの古い白黒の映画はライブピアノの伴奏が付されています。

I'm still puzzled about the use of 付く and される. I would have used ピアノの伴奏が付かれる for the passive form, but from ALC and Google it seems 付される is more common and thus 付する would be valid although I don't find anything like it in my dictionaries (the verb is 付く).

僕は黒澤の映画を良く知らないけどこの映画は「乱」と「生きる」の同じ時代の作品何ので良い映画かもしれません。チャップリン又はバスター・キートンを見せる映画館は現代には珍しいので、この特別な映画館で古い映画を見るともっと強いインパクトがあるんですね。

独学だけ、２００６年４月から学ぶの始めて、ＲＴＫを読んでいます。
いつも友だちは「なぜ日本語を習いたいの？」と聞いています。
私は「さ・・・」と言っていますよ。　実はいろんなことが好きですね、たとえば・・・

音楽
私はＰＯＰが好きじゃない人ですけど、上手い歌手がいっぴいるんです。
Ｃｈａｒａの優しくてかわいくて声がすばらしいと思います。
それにＳｈｉｉｎａ　ＲｉｎｇｏとＢｏｎｎｉｅ　Ｐｉｎｋに興味があって、最近知ってたＳａｌｙｕが面白いと思います。

そういえば日本語の発音だけ音楽みたいだと思います。

映画
ＳａｌｙｕとＣｈａｒａはすてきな映画のサントラを歌いました。Ｉｗａｉ　Ｓｈｕｎｊｉの映画だけど。
「リリ・シュウシュウのすべて」(All about Lily)と「Swallowtail Butterfly」がすごーーーい！
なんか悲しくて長い映画だから、ゆっくり見て下さい(^_^)

ドラマ
私もドラマがいっぱい見ているんで、一番好きな俳優と女優はＮａｋａｍａ　ＹｕｋｉｅとＡｂｅ　Ｈｉｒｏｓｈｉです。かっこいし、楽しし、「トリック」と「ごくせん」と「結婚できない男」を進みます。
英語の字幕は悪いかなぁ・・・　必要ですけどね。

女性
