Learning with ADD/ADHD. Techniques?

#1
Hi everyone Big Grin

Just a short question, are there fellow students with diagnosed ADD/ADHD? And if so, what kind of techniques do you use to study vocab? The J.W. Heisig method seems to work very well, but kanji are not the language Smile

Do you take meds to overcome parts of the condition?

I don't have ADHD (at least, not that I know of) but I do have a hard time concentrating on 1 thing for more than 20 minutes... To the point that I usually pause TV to go do something else, then come back later and watch more... I've paused a 40 minute program as much as 5 times. -sigh- It's the same with games, books, manga, and everything else.

Anyhow, my advice is to enjoy it. Find a learning method that you like (Smart.fm, Anki, Renshuu, ReadTheKanji.com, whatever) and do it when you feel like it, rather than trying to force yourself at it. In the meantime, be reading mangas and watching a lot of TV. But of course, only when you want to.

If you're like me, you'll flit between them for a while, then grow sick of them and skip them for a few days or a week, then come back to them again.

I've managed to keep this up for a couple years now, and I'm steadily (but slowly) learning. I now even have a language partner and do much better than I expected.

I have a friend who is ADD. Not sure how he copes with it.
I think it's linked to making stuff interesting and entertaining so he can keep the focus for long periods of time. So I recommend you keep it interesting/fun to do.

(If any of this sounds mean I apologize)

To be honest this is probably the way to go. I _can_ go into serious study mode _if_ i manage to get me focused. The letter part is actually the very hard thing. I can hardly control what I prime myself to. I wish I could just go and say: "OK japanese" and I'd go fully focused on japanese. That works _sometimes_. But it's in no way reliable and hence no real solution. Big Grin
