I received my confirmation email (with password) immediately. The email has a link the site's "My account" area and all you do is enter your user name (email) and the password (which you can later change). We must cancel before 11 pm (EST) on Wed to avoid payment. [edit: the cancellation deadline is actually 11 pm Thurs, and the paid month would start Friday]
In terms of picture quality, Winamp says it's 512x288 YV12 @ 431 kbps. No idea what YV12 is or whether it would be different with a different player or if I bypassed my ancient router. I suppose I should try it wired (15 Mbps)? The site says minimum requirement is 500 kbps, but the FAQ recommends 3 Mbps. (?) The audio and video were never uninterrupted, but the picture isn't very sharp and has some trouble with movement.
I don't know much about this stuff, but if there's something I can do check formats or quality, just let me know.
I can't see myself paying $30/s for that picture quality. TV Japan (NHK plus a few other network programs) costs $17/m here, cable PVR is much more reliable, and one can find better quality versions of many othe network TV programs, some with Japanese subs. But I see the value of novelty and variety...
btw Did you watch Ryomaden (or any other NHK drama)? I loved (most of) the drama Jin, so I thought I'd try to find Ryomaden.

Yeah, $30/mo is definitely pretty steep. Especially for something like this.
Unfortunately, I don't have any alternatives right now. It's either take it, or don't watch TV...which probably wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for all of the info about wist. I think I'll just stick with keyhole tv for now. It's kind of crappy, but at least it's free and crappy. That + TV-J will keep me happy enough.
@Thora I would have gotten more into Ryoumaden if I had had the time to do it, and the DVR space for it. It's a really good series, and I like the guy who plays Ryouma, but I just missed too many episodes and got too far behind. I'll probably just wait for next year's Taiga and try to get into that, depending. Not sure what it's going to be yet, as I haven't watched too much TV lately. (Stupid JLPT.)
One thing TV-J does that's really useful is run a subbed version of the Taiga series on Saturdays at 5pm EST. It's usually a few episodes behind, but that's good enough to check your understanding of what's going on. The Taiga takes a lot of effort to keep up with. 52 weeks. ugh. Feels more like a job than a series.
TV-J/NHK has a lot of other good dramas... it's kind of hit-and-miss some seasons. I like the current renzoku, "Teppan." It's a bit soap-opera-y, but it's only 15 min/day. Nothing else really struck my fancy, and I missed the first 2 eps of 20th Century Boys, dangit, so that boat has sailed.
I usually wind up watching a lot of other random stuff, like "Gatten," "Keitai O-giri" (Forget what it's really called... the show where everyone texts in funny answers to silly questions... sort of like Match Game), and "Cool Japan," (aka, listen to foreigners ooh and aaah about AMAZING Japanese rice cookers.) "Cool Japan" is interesting sometimes, but it can also be kind of annoying, too... but that's another post for another time.
There's a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting, I'm sure. "Bura Tamori" is pretty good. Tamori wanders around Tokyo trying to find random ancient places on old Edo maps, so that's kind of interesting if you like history.

I'm not sure if it makes a big difference to anyone, but I just figured out that I can stream wist.tv to my xbox. It's an old modded xbox using xbmc, which can open video streams. Makes me wonder if a 360 could do it natively? I haven't tried all of them, but some of the streams don't like to let the video work (probably different codecs)
It looks a lot better on TV than it does on my computer, although when there's a lot of movement it's a little blurry, and the refresh rate is a little bit slower than normal TV.
Still, it's pretty awesome.

If anyone is interested, then I created a java client to WIST-TV, actually in Groovy. But they are the same. A little more development work is needed to get a 'packagable' program, but if you have experience in Java environment, I can post the code in git or someplace like that. The program was written using netBeans on the Mac, so it works with snow leopard out of the box via quicktime, or vlc. Earlier versions of OSX require a special mpeg plugin to get WIST streams to work (within quicktime).
Let me know if you are interested!

What exactly does it do?
I have no problem getting the streams to open in quicktime/vlc/whatever I want.

Correct me if i'm wrong... but seems like there is still no good solution here.
Wist seems to be getting mixed reviews.
KeyHole is miserable quality...
any other solutions out there that seem to be working for people?

Freshverse.com is back up! Only one stream though, but it's still better quality than KeyholeTV!
