i was unaware that it used to be a tracker. even so, it's not live streaming tv, which is a shame. you can get hardsubbed shows anywhere online.

The invitation code system on AZNV doesn't seem to work properly, so don't get your hopes up. But if you try now and then, eventually you will probably be able to register anyway, without code, just as I and several others did.

But I much preferd the live streams, I miss them! Neither the media player streams or TV ants have worked for quite a while (for me anyway, are any of you able to display the Channel list in TV Ants?).

I now use AZNV from time to time instead, but you could just as well use Youtube or some Torrent-site to find what you're after.

freshverse died a long time ago. There was another site that was posted on
the freshverse bboard that was meant to replace it. Unfortunately, they recently
announced that they can't afford to do the streaming anymore...... :-(

Livestation isn't really streaming TV. Just a collection of public streams from
many sites. But definitely not live steaming TV.

I wish I could at least get TV Asahi and NHK Education, since there are shows on those
channels that I'm dying to see.

If you guys want high-quality japanese channels, another option would to do a yearly subscription for a lot of japanese channels. But there is one downside, you gotta watch a lot of j-tv in order to fully benefit from that subscription. But knowing a lot of people here, that wouldn't be a problem.

@ta12121 What sort of subscription are you talking about? Are you talking about subscribing to each station through their website or something like that, or getting one through a satellite provider? I'm slightly confused.

The only Japanese channel you can subscribe to in the US via satellite is TV-Japan, and it costs ~$27 month on Dish Network. (I know, because I subscribe to it.) It's basically a repackaged NHK/BS feed, with the odd dorama from another network (but that's pretty rare.) It's ungodly expensive, but it has been a tremendous help for my listening comprehension the past 2 years.

The upside: very few commercials. The only ones you'll get are done in 日本語 for the NA market, and they're only shown at the end of shows. The downside: no commercials originating from Japan. So no wacky stuff. (Maybe that's a good thing.)

Programming is kind of all over the place. Being NHK, it's a little on the geezer side, but you can work around it. Also, if you're looking for anime... look somewhere else. The closest you'll get are old Anpanman reruns or Tom Sawyer reruns from like 1975.

That said, I like being able to turn on my TV, put it on something Japanese, and not have any excuses. I'm totally hooked on ガッテン, of course. And you always get the Taiga dorama, whether you like it or not (this year it's Ryoumaden), plus the renzoku doramas, which run every day for ~15 minutes or so.

And of course there's news. Lots of news. Tons of news. And some sports. Followed by more news.

Ah, and I almost forgot: now it's 相撲 time. So my TV screen will be filled (literally) with beefy men for the next 2 weeks, whether I like it or not.

So it has its pluses and minuses.

yea i was talking about through service providers. But I remember reading somewhere on this forum about numerous channels for a monthly subscription. Which is still pretty expensive(25$+). For only 5 channels or so. But for online subscription for high-quality streams

Haven't tried it yet. Unfortunately, you need Windows XP or Vista, which is kinda a deal-killer for linux-zelot me.

Looks like there are also some services where you basically rent a Slingbox in Japan for 2500～3500円 a month. Those might give you a little better selection, but it all depends on where your base station is located.

It all depends on the quality of the streams, though. Someone needs to take the plunge and let us know how good the picture quality is, and how badly it would mess up your bandwidth.

They say you can record stuff with their software, but it sounds kind of vague as to how/what format you get it in. Since everything is shifted +14 hours for us East Coasters, it's almost a necessity to catch some shows.

The "coming soon" DVR/Media Box for TVs sounds somewhat interesting... again, it depends on how it's implemented, and whether/how it supports stuff like HD and HDMI.

I don't think the price is too bad, considering what I'm paying now for NHK. But it depends on the product.

You're right, and you have to let them know by e-mail, which makes me wonder if it would actually be cancelled in time.

It also seems that they're not very effective at this whole "buying things online" phenomena.

I just signed up, and they said they'd email me, but I haven't gotten anything -- nor has my card been charged (which might be because of the campaign...or because banks in Japan don't run at night)

I thought they were based in NYC? But if they're in Japan, if it requires any humans to do anything, you won't see anything, because it's ~4 am still.

Either way, making people e-mail them to cancel to avoid having to get charged on Thanksgiving day is a little bit out-of-touch. When your market is in the US, you shouldn't pick a major US holiday, even if your primary audience is Japanese.

Yeah good call, it's all in New York. That makes even less sense that I haven't gotten an email yet...

It does say that they're not going to charge my card until later, but if I signed up, I'd like to at least be informed about it....I can't even logon without receiving a password. And it's not in my spam folder either.

Well that's quite an interesting idea. However, if it's anything like the 1seg viewer I had on my phone when I was there, I would definitely not want to pay $200+ for that kind of quality.

OK, I got wist working. It says you need to download their software to do it, but I found a link that it just opens up in Quicktime (on a mac, no less no rebooting to windows!) in the browser. Doesn't seem to work in VLC for some reason

So if you could think of it as ~$4/mo per channel

The quality seems to be roughly the same as the mms links that were floating around here before. I've found that I can save it, but I'm not sure how their software works, or if you could schedule things to be downloaded. I'll give it a shot when I'm not so busy.

$30 is kinda steep, especially for the quality you're getting, but hey...it's better than nothing. And it's free for a few days, so why not give it a shot?

@Asriel: So how did you get wist to work? Did they send you an email or something? Is it a login setup through their website? Does the video drop out/stutter? What's the resolution on it (how far can you take it before it starts to look bad?)

The 1-seg thing is kind of odd. I thought 1-seg was a Japan-only thing, too... that just doesn't seem possible for it to work outside of Japan. Where would the signal come from?

It's just P2P software. I assume the USB device is just copy protection.
