Actually, I'd be grateful if someone who knows a little about darwin would compile qt/etc for X11, and then run Anki as an X11 app instead of as a native cocoa app. I suspect the performance may be better than the native version!

When did you all switch to Anki for RTK kanji? Or did you ever--do you just use Anki for vocab and sentences?
A few months ago I decided not to look into Anki until I finished RTK. But today, my last card was added (woot!). Reviewing on this site and anki would mess up Lietner`s process a bit (imo). So Now I am not sure whether to 1. jump straight into anki and drop my reviewing on this site, 2. keep anki just for vocab and sentences, or 3. wait to switch to anki after I hit a certain milestone (eg. 1700 kanji in the last stack).
What is everyone`s opinion on this? I apologise if this has been brought up before. I think this topic is as long as Heisig`s book now. (Anki doesn`t have a forum does it??)

How do you randomize the way the cards are presented? They always come at you in the same order? When making a new model, I think you can choose to have the cards appear randomly or in order. So as resolve suggested, why not make your own Heisig deck? If you go to the Japanese keywords thread or email me, you can have access to the spreadsheet we're working on which will give you all of the keywords, the associated kanji and frame number. (And other data too).
From there, take a look on the Anki wiki and you'll find instructions for how to import data into Anki from spreadsheets. I linked to these instructions in one of my posts on the Japanese keywords thread. It's quite easy. I'd imagine the entire process should take around 15 minutes.
Once you've made the deck, you could share it with everyone on the wiki in the example decks page.

Whether you prefer Anki's scheduling system or this site's. 2. Whether it's important for you to review offline or not. 3. Whether you're willing to start again. As far as I'm aware, there's no way to transfer your progress.

Bearing in mind point 3, I think your option 3 would be a bit crazy. If you're going to switch, do it earlier rather than later.

I think your idea for making a Heisig deck is a good one, but right now with the test less than 3 weeks away, I gotta stick to cramming vocab and grammar (and yes, that means recognition only, for now). Maybe afterwards!
For now, I'm using this website and speedanki, plus making my own cards.

Going off topic but I also have a model for grammar for level 1 JLPT. I made a spreadsheet that I have 70% finished. If you'd like to use that, or help me to populate the final 30%, let me know. There's a JLPT 1 thread somewhere with this stuff on it. Let's continue the discussion there if you're interested.

Good idea. Can you send me a link?
Also I'm curious as to how your model looks. Mine has 4 fields, on the front is "expression" and "example sentence" and on the back is "meaning" and "notes."

Is the same thing possible for an iPod as well? o_0 I am not sure whether it is possible to run 3rd party apps in an iPod, so I just want some clarification here. Thanks ^_^
And so far, I have been using Anki to just learn words and their meanings but I have been reading a lot about using example sentences to study grammar, meaning etc. How does this work exactly? I have been lurking for quite a bit now and due to the lack of availability of decks from other members who seem to follow this methodology, I have no idea on how to go about using this method. So I guess I need some clarification there as well :/ Thanks again...
I forgot to mention that I am currently preparing for the Level 4 exam in 3 weeks. ^_^ So if anyone wants me to upload the deck that I am currently using to study for the exam, I will be glad too, but, be prepared to encounter kanji and words out of scope from lvl 4 cos I just keep adding them if I feel they are easy to learn.

Please bring back a way to keep a card at the same level. There are many times when I get cards with something like a 20 day interval and my choices are:
0, 1, 2=6days, 3=40days, 4
In this case I think it would be nice if I could just keep it at 20 days. I saw a similar request to this on the tracker but I thought I would post it here to invite others to chime in on whether or not it is a widely missed or dreamed of feature.

I tried this but still nothing. the path is- /Users/Askia47/元気八.anki
I put this example one you used
/Volumes/Anki/Anki.app/Contents/MacOS/Anki ~/Documents/tango.fc
and edited it like this
/Volumes/Anki/Anki.app/Contents/MacOS/Anki ~/Documents/anki/元気八.anki
it still gives me the error. Could i just delete the hidden files and start fresh again? i already backed by the main files. Could that work?

You need to pass it the name of the backup deck. Your usual deck file is probably corrupted.

I briefly looked at Anki a few months ago, when it first came out, but it didn't catch my attention. Now, after 38 pages of discussion about it, I thought I'd give it another try.
I have been an iFlash addict for a long time now, running 7,000+ card decks on it, but I like to keep an open mind about things. Some of my findings are below.
I tried it out on my Apple Powerbook '17, there were no issues with speed whatsoever. However, the automatic hiragana creation didn't work at all.
The features I like about Anki:
- The ability to apply italic, bold and underlining to select portions of the text on any side of the card - this feature is missing from iFlash and irritates me beyond belief. One thing that still seems to be missing from both applications is the ability to apply colour in a similar way.
- Web-based reviews. Although this is of limited interest: when I have time to do reviews I am typically accessing the web via my notebook anyway... And it's surprising how many computer terminals in public places don't support Asian fonts (British Airways lounge in the Heathrow airport is the most appalling example of that).
The features I am indifferent about:
- Repetitions spread throughout the day - not sure how this helps if one is trying to concentrate on one task at a time.
- Very detailed customisation options. It's good to be in control but turning into a software developer in the process may not be everyone's cup of tea...
- Graphs. Nice to have but they do nothing for the workload.
- Absence of 'categories'. 'Categories' are a nice feature that iFlash has but I have found it to be of limited practical use.
The features I didn't like:
- Unique responses are required for the answer field. Why can't one create 10 cards with 10 different Chinese characters that all mean 'monkey' (as is the case in my current card deck)?!
- Card design with too much English text around - as opposed to iFlash where there is virtually zero English (or any other) text. I'm sure this wouldn't sit well with AJATT fans.
- Card design in general: the text is aligned towards the top of the card (and I haven't found the way to change it).
- I spent a lot of time looking for a way to delete a card from the deck. I even went through the help pages. I still don't know how to do it. The 'delete' button doesn't seem to do the trick on the Powerbook.
- Keeping multiple decks open at the same time. It might be possible but I haven't figured out how.
- Card creation and card editing is easier on iFlash - which basically works just like Excel spreadsheet. In general, iFlash has got the 'Mac' look-and-feel about it which Anki clearly hasn't. iFlash is intuitive whereas Anki is far less so.
I am sure some of the above points are just 'education issues' for me. And yet the overall verdict is that I will stick to iFlash for the time being as the only real advantage of Anki for my work style (variable font types) doesn't outweight everything else...

.
2. You can set the UI to Japanese (in the program).
3. Just open the edit deck options, and right click on a card and select delete
4. It is possible but tricky. I think you have to make multiple exes.
5. This is probably a common complaint against Anki, but is necessary I believe to keep the extent to which users can customize cards.
