i just downloaded anki 3.5 for mac (for the very first time: i am new to this program).
however, when i try to open it and select "japanese" i get the following error message:
OSError: [Errno2] No such file or directory: 'Users/bart/Documents/Anki Sample Decks/mydeck.media'.
apparently this file "mydeck.media" is not installed when i installed the anki software. somebody knows how to fix this?

Looks like a bug. You can work around it by running this command from a terminal:
mkdir ~/Documents/"Anki 0.3 Sample Decks"
Thanks for the report!

I figured it out in the meantime, although more accidentally and in a strange way: I opened the "package contents" of anki and found some sample decks: I created a folder Anki Sample Decks and added one of the sample decks and that gave me an empty deck, which I can use for my own purposes. Thanks for the help anyway! ^_^

It seems that Reviewing the Kanji have changed the format of kanji links before it whas something like:"http://kanji.koohii.com/study.php?framenum=2042" and now it is "http://kanji.koohii.com/study/?framenum=2042". You will have to fix this in the next version of Anki.

Oh, that's a shame. The link is defined in the card model definition anyway, so you only need to change one thing on your local deck. Just open up the model properties and change the question format.

is there anyway to change the sound-player to not auto-play when you see the card?

Yorkii: If you don't want to hear the sound straight away, why not put it in the answer instead of the question?
Pcsl88: yes, appreciate the report :-)

Hi Resolve, thanks, but can't find any new mail from you. Weird.

I read in another thread about users having a problem with phonetic auto-generation errors. That led me to this idea. Why not adapt a predictive text approach. What I am envisioning is auto generation of the most commonly selected reading. If a compound is ambiguous perhaps it could be clickable with a list of choices popping up this could in turn modify the phonetic selection algorithm. Just an idea, but I thought I would share.

Because it would be reinventing the wheel (there are more advanced tools out there already). Eventually I will move to the "IPADIC" dictionaries and a more sophisticated morphological analyzer like 'mecab' or 'chasen'. The dictionaries are 50MB uncompressed though - so the current solution is a tradeoff between accuracy and size. If I move to a better dictionary, I'll have to start distributing them separately.

If size is the only price for better auto-furigana, then, heck, bring it on. I keep Anki on my smaller of flashdrives and even for that baby, another 50 MB is nothing.
Although, it is ultimately up to the user to proofread everything.

Yeah, I don't think I copied it explicitly. It's easy to fix, so just send me your deck when you're ready. :-)

Man, this thread is getting too big. Perhaps another thread just on question and answers would be appropriate, not sure.
Anyway, as I did not find it, is there a way to add our stories to the Heisig card list all at once? Since there's no export function, I'm not sure of the most efficient way to do this. I have my stories in Excel format in that matters.

Nice suggestion, Nukemarine.
Resolve,
I'd be happy to go through this entire thread and compile a list of (frequently-asked or critical) questions that have been asked and what answers you've provided in response to them. Said list could then be imported into the Anki wiki or something.

I'm not sure how many FAQs you could extract from the history of this thread - much of the material relates to things which have subsequently been added to Anki, or various bugs.
That said, for lack of an official Anki forum, this thread is pretty useful.

Is there a way to force a card to show up as next new one? I first thought 'make due' would do that but apparently it only resets already seen cards :/

Is there way to merge decks?
I want to merge my deck with the Heisig example deck. Perhaps an option could added to import from current versions of Anki?
I had imported my Heisg deck from mnemosyne and used for a while before I realized there was a Heisig example deck. My deck is less than half full and I wanted to add all the cards I didn't have into my currrent deck from the example one. Or if some one has the deck in a importable format, I would take that.

Kurosawa: that's not what "make due" is designed for. If you want to force particular words to appear first, tag them "important" and put "important" in the list of high priority tags in the deck properties.
Killersquierl: Importing and exporting Anki 0.3.x decks will be available soon. For now, you can synchronize two decks to the same server deck in order to merge them.
