hello! i just started using anki, and i think its great! however, i do have one gripe, which is if i notice a mistake in the reading, its a real hassle to go back and change it. it would be great if you could edit straight in the window, or even just have a button that pulls up the editor focused to the current card.
anyways, the program is really amazing.. ive never used srs before, but i expect that in the future i will use physical flash cards for short term memorizing, ie before tests, but anki for the real stuff. Smile
Hi skylarth,

What version of Anki are you using? If you click the 'edit' button on the toolbar, it should bring up the editor with the current card selected.
ah! no way. Smile thanks alot. heh. i had been flagging and going back later. :/

Resolve, I'm translating the pot file that you post here on 29th July. I suppose that news version of Anki have more text strings but, will anyway that pot file that i'm translating working for Anki 0.3.2? I assume that in that case, I will translate the text of news versions later.
Go, resolve, go! The WYSIWYG inline HTML editor is an excellent addition, BTW.
Pcls88: New translation files are in http://repose.cx/dump/trans/ - thanks for your hard work!

wzafran: Thanks :-)
Hi Resolve, an eventful day I had!

Re-installed I.E. 7 and the questions didn't show, but then it automatically updated two security patches, re-started and left me with the black screen of death. No function keys on start-up helped, just a dead pc. FINALLY found my windows cd and popped her in with no change. So, I connected to an external monitor and for SOME strange reason, windows loads up. Nothing happened with the restore cd. Odd. But I try I.E. and go to anki and questions show up. But it seems like you made a few changes in the interim, so thanks for that. Thinking of just going over to Firefox now.

BTW, since my keitai worked, I used it a bunch yesterday and noticed a lot of cards were switched. So, I checked out the on-line list and it appears all my non-kanji words with the 'b' extension have been flipped. Anyway to fix 'em?

Thanks again!
Aikiboy: I was waiting for you to send me your deck so I could merge it with Heisig - if you want, I'll just use the deck on the server to do so, and fix the ordering at the same time. (one kanji character + 'b' is 50% japanese and 50% english, so it had to guess, but guessed wrongly)

Edit: ah, you had english on the Japanese side of the field for those cards. Working on it..

Edit2: sent!

i am working from japanese to english, but is there a way to either go to english to japanese or even randomize it all using the same deck without adding cards? maybe a toggle button somewhere? i hope this wasn't asked already. i skimmed the last 17 pages and it didn't seem to be mentioned. i'm making good progress as it stands now so i'm considering going from english to japanese just to attack the vocab at a new angle. a 'random' button would be interesting just to spice things up. thanks!
Sannomiya, to answer on behalf on resolve (that is, if I get it right), so long as your deck of cards has two models in place (the English->Jap model and vice versa) any cards you have in your current deck can automatically be reversed (and the best part is that any updates you make to one model will be automatically followed through in its adjacent model).

By this, I mean you get the same card contents, flipped, without having to add new cards into the mix.

Perhaps you should try experimenting with the models feature!
i see. so a new model would be made in the 'display properties' and toggling that would reverse the entries without adding cards or creating new deck. got it, thanks. much experimenting being done.
Adding a model changes the way new cards are created, not the way existing cards are handled. I'll add that option in the future.
Resolve, what's the difference between tags and facts? I don't know what are the difference and so I'm having problems translating it.

In po file (uy/sync.py:142), the line "Use existing '%s' on server" i think that have to be "UseR existing '%s' on server", is that correct?

Edit: Menu context in fields can't be translated (Edit Deck)
It seems to be a day of translations! I received a French translation earlier and people are working on German and Spanish now too!

The line is correct - it means "use the deck '%s' on the server, which already exists".

Oh, and just to confirm, the translation file looks like this:

#: forms/main.py:449
msgid "&Import..."
msgstr ""

You need to put the new text in the 'msgstr' part, not the 'msgid' (someone else made that mistake earlier :-)
I've built Anki packages for Debian, which should work on Ubuntu as well -- if there are other users of those two OSes around, please give them a try and tell me if they work!

http://magnet.ofb.net/debian/unstable/bi...1_i386.deb

At the moment, this will not install on Debian stable (etch) or testing (lenny) systems, because they don't have the required version of python-qt4 yet. Unstable (sid) systems will have no problems, nor will anyone that's manually installed the right version of python-qt4.
Neat, thanks for that. If you send me the build scripts I'll provide Debian packages for all future releases, or I can link to your site.
Is there any way to sync Anki decks with Twinkle for palm? I use my palm to practice while commuting, however, the Tkinkle card management software (Twinkedit) is not very efficient. It would be nice if Anki had a function to export deck cards and statistics to Twinkle and vice versa.

One thing...it didn't seem to install the shortcut in the "application/educations" section of the quick launch bar thingy. Though I can type anki in the command line and it works.

using ubuntu feisty.

Same experience for me on feisty.
It will show up in the Debian menu (if you have the 'menu' package installed) under Applications -> Education, but not yet the native GNOME or KDE menus. I'll fix that for the next build.
the new add cards and edit cards screens are bloody excellent! It's soooo much easier to [ctrl]+B stuff that I want to have bold rather than inserting <B> ... </B>
I'm having problems at importing a mnemosyne file. The program does't allow me to mapping fields, I only can press import file.Is that a bug? By the way, 0.3.0 could import correctly.
It is a bug in 0.3.2. The next version will be out soon
Hi Resolve-san,

Just tried Anki, and must say I'm very impressed, especially by the intelligent fields system for the cards.

I'm currently a Supermemo user, and although we all know of its shortcomings, I never really considered switching to anything else mainly because of its powerful collection management tools and the time I already invested in it.

I think Anki might be the one to finally make me consider switching. I see in the tags system the potential to address my deck management needs, once mass tagging is implemented. The only problem left would be the ability to import my SM progress into Anki.

It seems someone was going to send you a sample SM-exported file so you would consider the possibility of writing an importer, right? I wonder how it turned out. SM can export the elements (cards) plus progress to a XML file, I'd think this is the most straightforward format to consider importing from. If you didn't get any SM sample yet, I can send you a SM-exported XML file.

Judging by some earlier posts, I'm supposed to be able to include images in my cards using an <img> tag, but whenever I include the tag (in fact, any HTML tag) in one of the fields, it doesn't get parsed, it just gets shown in the review in the exact way I enter them, <> characters included.

That's about it. Thank you for offering us this excellent piece of software for free.
