Cool, I've just sent to to the web@website address.
I just tried importing this and it loaded fine. Can I confirm that you:

a) created a new deck
b) chose Japanese as the model?
c) when Anki 'freezes' and doesn't come back, does closing it give you an 'errors were generated' message? Is there a log file in the Anki directory?

Edit: sorry, you mentioned the Japanese model earlier

Yup, I missed step A. That made the import complete straight away. Perhaps a warning before importing into a null deck might be helpful. Smile

Regarding the card dupes, I disabled the... uh... was it "Production"? (The one other than Recognition) and that had no effect on the import routine. Only after deleting it would I get the correct amount of cards with their expiry dates.

Thanks!

Even if you don't have any deck open, import should still work (it creates a new deck for you). I just tried it and it still imports quickly. Not sure what's causing the problem there.

Disabling should work like deletion when importing - it seems like there's a bug. I'll check it out, thanks.

resolve,

I actually had the same problem when I tried beta4 a few days ago. I tried again just now and it works fine, I actually just went to open an old deck and it automatically imported smoothly. Previously, I tried to import the deck by selecting the deck, format, etc and it would say something to the effect "This may freeze Anki for a while" but nothing would happen.
Hi Suffah,

If nothing happened but the user interface was responsive, it indicates that there was an error (as opposed to Anki getting into an infinite loop). Was anything in your error log?
Beta 5

Firstly, remove the old configuration file
(Mac/Linux: rm -rf ~/.ankidev, Windows, find it in Documents and Settings)
Remember that you'll need to reimport your .fc files, as previous .anki files
won't work.

Syncing is now enabled, and will sync to a test server, which you can access at:

http://repose.ath.cx:5001/study

The decks are a snapshot from today, upgraded to the new version. As with
previous betas, please don't use this beta for real work, as things may still
break. From this beta, I am going to start using 0.3 for my own deck, and if
that goes well, then probably beta6 will be safe to start using properly.

The same applies for the web interface - any data stored there will be lost when
I release 0.3.

I've enabled psyco in the latest beta, which should make Anki quite a bit faster
on Windows and Linux. Unfortunately, psycho is not available for the Mac.

Oh, and there are some JLPT sample decks again now.

Could any Mac users confirm that hiragana generation is working properly?

Please let me know how you go!

Just logged in to see the test server and it looks like it has generated reverse flashcard entries for some of the cards. One of my decks (with 2100 cards) has 580 new ones which appear to be Answer->Question cards, and another deck with 160 cards has 80 new ones all of a sudden. Not sure if this will affect the final result if left unfixed, but it looks like a problem.
johnzep: looks like you've triggered a bug in deleting models when syncing. On your end it probably looks like Anki gets stuck syncing, and eventually returns "empty response". I'll have a look into it tonight after work.

JimmySeal: If you upgrade the decks manually, disabling all but the card model you want, do you get the correct number of cards?
oh noes!
Could you send me your local deck, and the steps you took to break syncing (if you remember)? It may help in tracking down the problem.

Yep, seems to be working fine.
hmmm...

I made a new user (johnzep2) and made a new deck...added a couple cards...and then the sync with the server still hangs

and this is the error message in the log file:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "ui\sync.pyc", line 30, in run
File "ui\sync.pyc", line 80, in syncDeck
File "anki\sync.pyc", line 87, in applyDiff
File "anki\sync.pyc", line 442, in <lambda>
File "anki\sync.pyc", line 489, in sendCmd
anki.errors.SyncError: {'type': 'noResponse'}

I haven't tried the beta yet, but I'm just referring to logging into the test server that you've set up. I did that this morning and my decks had extra cards waiting to be reviewed so it looks like that happened when you upgraded the snapshot this morning and might belie some deeper problem.

I'll give the beta a try soon.
JimmySeal: that's partly a design decision - by choosing the card models before importing you can prevent the extra cards from being generated, but it could probably be done better.

johnzep: Okay, I've been able to reproduce the problem, and it looks like I overlooked something in the diffing code. I'll release beta6 within a day or so once I get it fixed.
Beta 6

Syncing should work properly this time. Various bug fixes. Non-latin usernames
should really work this time.

Firstly, remove the old configuration file
(Mac/Linux: rm -rf ~/.ankidev, Windows, find it in Documents and Settings)
Remember that you'll need to reimport your .fc files, as previous .anki files
won't work.

The new test server is at a different location to the previous beta. As with the
previous beta, any data synced to the test server will be lost.

hi there - is there any way i canchange a .anki file i made with beta 4 to work with beta6? I got so much into it and it would be horrible if I had to scrap it Sad
still having syncing problems.

I deleted every old anki file or folder I could find to try to get a clean slate.

Made a fresh deck with a few cards.

Sync'd and chose the option "create new deck yada-yada on server"

it seems to hang and gives this message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "ui\sync.pyc", line 30, in run
File "ui\sync.pyc", line 80, in syncDeck
File "anki\sync.pyc", line 89, in applyDiff
File "anki\sync.pyc", line 438, in <lambda>
File "anki\sync.pyc", line 485, in sendCmd
anki.errors.SyncError: {'type': 'noResponse'}
I also switched over to linux to try out that version...

the syncing worked.

But in linux I have a different problem...I can't enter japanese text when adding new cards.

using SCIM --> Anthy I can enter japanese text in other programs, but in Anki it doesn't seem to work. and if I write japanese in another app and try to paste it, 猫 becomes \u732b.
I had that same problem. Found this fix.. not sure which step fixed it, or if it was a combination of them all as I did them all at once.

* im-switch -s scim_xim
* added "/SupportedUnicodeLocales =
en_US.UTF-8,en_GB.UTF-8,en_AU.UTF-8" to ~/.scim/global
* export QT_IM_MODULE=xim
johnzep: hmm. I'll do some more testing on windows

littleblue: I can manually upgrade it for you if you send it to me. Perhaps my warnings about "don't use this for serious work" were not clear enough.

Okay, the problem is the timestamps windows was generating don't have enough resolution. I should be able to push out beta7 in the next 12 hours. 3rd time lucky, I hope!

I tried this but didn't seem to work Sad
johnzep: Ubuntu?
