It's a bit strange that the abbott wants the government to come up with some protective measures... why doesn't he just come up with some himself? Or get a local wildlife agency involved. The government should have better things to do.

I once saw a very fat raccoon in New York City late at night, standing on a fire hydrant, before leaping in the air and somehow landing and getting stuck between the bars of an iron fence and just... hanging there, looking embarrassed. That REALLY surprised me.
I'm surprised they were even allowed into the country as pets, and so many of them. And that they were ever released. They need to find some hardworking Japanese insect that will keep the raccoon numbers down. ;-)
